Thread regarding Dell Inc. layoffs

Without solid raises and/or promotions, what's the incentive to stick around anymore?

For me, and I know this sounds ironic but it's not, it's my job security. My specific job in my specific org and the specific are of my org is so rarely touched by WFR because we are so small.
I stick around for that but, I stick around because I actually LOVE my job, my manager, every single person I work WITH or work in proxy with and I enjoy what I do.

BUT, the money needs to step up. For the 6 years I've been here, I've gotten a 10% raise, then a 3%, then a 5%, then a 2.5% then a 12% last year and a mere 6% this year.

My manager has put in request for promotions the last 3 years and is denied due to budgets. This year, I quite literally filled out an application for a new role that he had sent me - promoted role - and not more than a week later, it was rescinded because of budget.

I mean, I'm happy where I'm at in regards to my JOB but money wise? I'm so severely underpaid it's criminal. For my EXACT job that I'm doing right now, another fortune 500 company that's hiring for the SAME job with damn near the same requirements/skills/etc... pays 30-50k MORE than Dell is paying me.

I'm starting to struggle with the incentive to stick around at this point.

Been here for many years. There are shortcomings vs friends in the industry.

But I have a good shift, I’m not micro managed, and have a pretty good degree of autonomy in my small team.

Like I would turn down a role that paid $15-$20k if it could not convince me that it has an environment like dell has fostered.

The anxiety of getting the meeting from HR is constantly there though. Because if the previous rounds of WFR have told me anything, it’s that performance is only a very small factor. They’ll indiscriminately round up and cut good people.

@a8
I did apply but only time will tell if I get any response. Fingers crossed but I'm honestly happy where I'm at. So I'm in no rush.

"A six-year raise streak? Sure, buddy."

I've received a raise every year for all 9 years I have been with the company, but all were 3% or less. So really I received a pay cut most years once inflation is factored in. My latest "raise" was 1.5%

Dell isn’t exactly known for generous pay, unless you’ve got an executive title. Compensation across most roles lags well below market. And as for the OP… either you’re flexing hard or making things up. A six-year raise streak? Sure, buddy.

I agree with others on this OP os getting huge raises. For my role in ISG that max possible raise is capped at 6% and I have never gotten close to that. Been hereb9 years and am just barely breaking into $80k territory when folks in the same role in other geos are getting 5 figures. Since Dell deliberately underpays me I'll deliberately underperform while tending to side gigs while on the dell clock.

Honestly the only reason I'm still here is because I successfully got back to remote. Now I'm back to working my 2hrs a day for a cushy 6-fig job that comes with almost 6wks of annual vacation. All things aside, that's a pretty good deal tbh.

Though if they fire me, I won't cry. I'm at my CoastFIRE goal so I'll just go be a teacher or something.

You got comparatively huge raises in a secure position that you like. This is it. This is the goal. See if you can keep the job, while applying for other positions internally or externally. Doesn’t hurt to look, but you are in an enviable position.

Ho Lee F-k... during my 25 year skint in there I only got 10% once... mostly it was 2.5 to 3.5 and ended up with 122K when I left at I9.

Quite ironic to say, but you've got big salary increases.
Our managers normally get a budget that covers a horizontal 2% increase for the whole team, so every time they give you the max (4%) there are good chances some team members are getting 0.
Considering our managers want to avoid big salary differences across the team to avoid discontent, it's impossible to even get +4% twice in a row.

I do 10x more than all under same manager, but i get 5% raise because "I am already most expensive"... manager forgot to ask "and you don`t say I am great manager".

I hear you, walking into these soul-su-king buildings day after day feels like nails on a chalkboard. I don’t know who these other weird posters are, but everyone I talk to can’t stand this place. You can hear them trying to convince themselves: “I’m more productive now!” Yeah, okay, but you’re not working a full day and still complain about the commute. Sure, buddy. We all know you’re just coasting and cutting into MD’s wallet with that half-baked effort. But keep playing Mr Tuff Guy!

So after six years of these raises if you made let’s say 100k, your salary would be $144,766.13.
