It feels like there are no real ones left. Big tech has been cutting jobs for years, and the trend is only getting worse. The alternatives are unstable startups or trying to break into a new industry, which is much harder than it sounds. What's left for those who get laid off?

I'm finally taking the CoastFIRE step and I'm going to go teach at ACC.
Fu-k this corporate grind, I got enough money.
Find a non-tech business that requires your skills. Everyone needs sales people, marketing people, designers, managers, etc.
Or change your name to Ranjeet Patel on your applications.
In austin area you should sell concrete of construction tech. All the growth in our area means stability.
But you can find stable tech jobs. I got one but theu are not headquartered in austin and they give out no merchandise or shorts or weird gnome knick packs. Dell spends money horribly and over hires and mass layoffs. They are not responsible as I see the new company is.
I got my WFR after 23 years last August. My personal experience is that the tech sector in Austin is a wretched, terrible industry to be in, and it will only get worse. There are other industries with good future opportunities and healthier cultures. Take a look at mid-market players in the trades. If you want some ideas, check the news for where private equity firms are focusing on acquiring companies. That's where there's growth. It takes some work to position yourself, but some of the big tech skills transfer over and would be valuable in growing companies doing M&A.
Become a plumber = job security
This advice was given to me several years ago.
Make sure your basic skill set is in order.
Take some of those math classed you may have skipped in favor of one more coding language. Also, and this is aimed at those who grew up in America, make sure you speak and write English properly.
You don’t have to know another language, although it doesn’t hurt, but with all our international contacts for whom English is a second language we won’t sound like mo--ns when talking to a hiring manager in Germany, France, or India because we can’t complete a simple sentence without using slang or jargon.
I followed this advice and well Dell let me go two months ago, I had a job with a Swiss based company two weeks later.
The only move left is to take control. Learn something new. Be an entrepreneur.
Sorry, but that's the downside of being in high tech. Get on or get off.
I agree with you. All tech industries are affected. I have friends that are in different sectors of Tech and they are all experiencing the same thing. Layoffs, reorgs, offshoring which leads to less people, more work and resources that are less than capable.
