Thread regarding 3M layoffs

Way too many meetings

Way too little actual work getting done. We need to get rid of people who just meeting-surf all day and contribute exactly zero to the bottom line.

@2td 3M flattened the hierarchy, but really all they did was ki-l off all the 13s and 14s and then they padded the ranks with 16-17-18s.

So now, instead of having any chance for advancement, you have a top-heavy org that's can't get anything done because you have a team with 4 ICs reporting to a collection of 6 directors and VPs, and they want daily status updates.

Way too many meetings exist for a reason. To justify the continued patronage of a vast army of middle managers, who job is primarily to do the horsework of upper management.

Whereas at the bench level, there is acute shortage of people who can do the work that will lead to 1000 product launches in the next 3 years, which is BB's mandate.

I have 1.25 FTE resources in my lab working at the bench, whereas I provide updates to 6 managers on a regular basis, about how things are going. One manager even suggested regular weekly updates to "speed" up progress !

Anybody surprised why there are so many meetings.

If it's a fully remote job WFH not in the office at all. You tend to have more meetings so you can give updates on what you are doing and be accountable. Where in the office just being visible is enough. Sorry it's that way and you don't like it but you are invisible if you are remote.

What kind of a job do these people have where they can work from home? What do they produce? Only so many people can put together bs power points and policy changes.
What do you people working from home actually do that puts profit in Billy's pocket?

What we need is to get rid of the "yes" men.

Anyone eager to get back to the office is clearly awful at their job, which is why they need other people on the office -- otherwise, how can they prove they're doing anything?

All you pro-lRTO folks please just head on down to the nursing home where you belong.

Very glad that BB is getting those regional to be back to office to do some real work. Instead of sitting comfortably Wfh and asking for data to report upwards. Get real!

I can immediately tell when it's a plant work complaining because they think six sigma is bad.

The idea that maybe you could be more efficient if you spent less time scratching your a-s is offensive to the plants.

Spot on. Leave us Factory people to manage our factory. If anyone wfh wants some numbers to fill your spreadsheets, then come over and figure it out yourselves. Stop asking us to count or measure or check or test for you for nothing. if you get the kudos then you are the owner of the projects or CI or whatever sick sigma it is.

i work in a plant and YES there's so many meetings and dashboard tracking now. There is a global planning inventory and service meeting. there's yield/scrap meeting. there is a global quality meeting. All are driving the plants crazy. there is only so much you can squeeze a balloon. Plants need volume growth. PERIOD.

Brown barely counts as a boomer. The word doesn't mean " older person I don't agree with". Plenty of younger people have mandated RTO.

Eye on the ball, @OP. The company just announced the biggest anti-worker policy in ages, and you're in here with some anodyne "what's up with all the meetings" post? Did I accidentally stumble into 2015?

Unless you're trying to deliberately distract us from the real issues? Well, we won't be distracted.

I don't mind the meetings. I'm not here to make money for 3M, because they don't reward results.

When Bill talks about our "performance culture," what he really means is that the out-of-touch boomers running this place. Assume presence is productivity, so work is just a performance; they didn't care if you actually accomplish anything, and they're definitely not going to promote you based on results.

I get paid the same whether I work hard or if I slack off, so why exert myself?

Before Mack the Kn--e ditched the Minnesota Mining name for 3M, meetings were too frequent but not oppressive. Mack and his Sick Sigma meetings started the slide. Now 3M means Meetings and More Meetings.

The ghost of Tireman, who raged and cried about not having people in the office (to stroke his ego), is still alive. He loved meetings and had some hilarious moments at his raucous townhalls
