Thread regarding Oregon layoffs

ODOT Layoffs

Oregon’s 2025 legislative session ended without passing a critical transportation funding bill, jeopardizing billions in planned infrastructure spending and triggering potential layoffs at the Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT). The proposed package, introduced late in the session on June 9, aimed to generate revenue through increased taxes and fees to support transportation projects across state, city, and county levels. Despite Democrats holding a supermajority, they failed to secure enough votes before adjournment on June 27. Republican House Leader Christine Drazan opposed the bill, citing rushed timing and fiscal concerns, while Democratic Representative Susan McLain, co-chair of the Joint Transportation Committee, voiced worries about impacts on public services and employment. Governor Tina Kotek addressed the issue in a June 28 press conference but has not confirmed a special session to revisit the matter. Without new funding, ODOT faces staffing cuts and reduced capacity for road maintenance and wildfire hazard mitigation, leaving Oregon’s infrastructure future in political limbo.
