Layoffs Over Leadership: The Silent Cost of Corporate Decline

What began in 2020–2021 as an initiative aimed at restoring the company’s focus on value creation, operational efficiency, and performance has unfortunately evolved into a cycle marked by layoffs, talent attrition, and a culture increasingly focused on optics rather than integrity. This shift is reflected in the company’s inconsistent performance, operational instability, and an inability to attract or retain skilled professionals.

Employee feedback mechanisms lack credibility due to the absence of anonymity, and senior leadership appears disconnected from operational realities—often lacking both accountability and meaningful engagement. As a result, the organization has devolved into a landscape dominated by power struggles, internal politics, and actions that contradict its stated values of transparency, respect, and entrepreneurship.

Numerous employee testimonials have highlighted these systemic issues, yet little has changed. Until there is a significant overhaul at the senior executive level—bringing in competent, mission-driven leaders—there is unlikely to be any meaningful progress. In the current environment, employee loyalty is diminishing, with many viewing the organization merely as a source of income rather than a place to build a career or make a meaningful impact.

Pembina began pushing the true improvement people out way before 2020. A slew of us were walked out in 2017-2018 as the PWC kids showed up. It is easier to keep your suits and shirts clean when you don't have to actually head out to a worksite. Pembina was a company of operators and slowly became a company of consultants.
