Does anyone know if Amazon is better with career progression than Dell? They are currently facing the same sh*t as us when it comes to layoffs but I’m applying for a hardware role which is significantly less paid than my current hardware role in Dell but as we know, Dell will outsource everything anyways. I’m thinking about upskilling and doing all the AWS certs and getting into Solutions Architect role eventually. There are barely any industry level courses available in Dell annymore and my boss ignored my inquiry about ITIL certification.

I learned a tough lesson at Dell: I was advised to earn certifications to advance my career, so I obtained my MCSA, MCSE, and CCNA. Despite this, I've remained in the same role for over 20 years. I never advanced because I don’t have connections within the company. I’m a tech enthusiast, not outgoing, and I struggle with networking and socializing.
At Dell, soft skills outweigh hard skills for career advancement, but those soft skills may not make you competitive in the job market after leaving Dell.
“ unfortunately At Dell in order to move up you need to know someone not certifications”
All too true. They push mentoring - but if you hitch your wagon to the wrong mentor then your career could crash and burn along with the mentor’s career.

Amazon will carry more prestige when you move away from it. Amazon on your resume will open more doors for you than dell.
never think of any company as a marriage. think of them as just dating
Amazon = Dell
They are exactly the same .
My son recently left after 6 yrs. in IT
Just saying
I think any of the Hyperscalers are impacting companies like Dell.
Career progression is what you make it. Everyone is different. Be careful because Amazon people were going through a lot of change with things like RTO.
True....Dell will reward you if you a--lick. Amazon will reward you if you RTO
A colleague of mine, previously at Dell, now works at Amazon and described the transition as a stark contrast. He began at Amazon in IT support and, within two years, advanced to a management role. He’s highly intelligent, but Dell failed to leverage his potential, and he was laid off along with others. In my opinion, Amazon is exceptional at inspiring its workforce. At Amazon, certifications can propel your career forward. At Dell, you could hold 20 certifications and still remain in the same role indefinitely.
I wish you good luck with your endeavors.
