Reports of coming layoffs swirl at Microsoft as workers worry they're next

Microsoft employees aren't getting much time to take a breath between layoff rounds as thousands could be let go in early July, according to news reports. The Redmond, Washington-based tech giant announced in mid-May that it was firing more than 6,000 employees companywide, including 1,985 based in Washington. Less than three weeks later, Microsoft terminated another 305 Washington employees.

  • Microsoft is laying off around 2,000 employees in July 2025, mainly in the Xbox and global sales teams, as part of a broader restructuring to improve margins and focus on AI, following over 6,000 layoffs in May alone.
  • The layoffs reflect a strategic shift toward artificial intelligence, with Microsoft planning to spend $80 billion on AI infrastructure in FY25, driving cost-cutting across other divisions including the controversial downsizing of its DEI team.
  • This move aligns with a wider tech industry trend, where companies like Intel, Meta, and HP are also cutting thousands of jobs to pivot toward AI and correct pandemic-era overhiring, with over 61,000 tech layoffs recorded in 2025 so far.
