Thread regarding Dell Inc. layoffs

Relocation dilemma

I was offered a “great opportunity” to move, but after hearing about others who were relocated and then let go shortly after, I’m really hesitant. Uprooting my family for something that might not last feels too risky, no matter how much they talk about future growth. The relocation package just doesn’t cover the chance of being the first to go if cuts happen again. Anyone else in the same boat?

Yea - don’t move for Dell. You’ll move and in a year they’ll WFR you. Not worth it.

Right now, it doesn't make sense to move for a company. The hiring situation for IT doesn't seem to be good. Linkedin is full of people being out for more than 6 months. This definitely feels like a different cycle for hiring.

Unless you have a lot of money or close to it, I wouldn't do it. I know of nobody in that situation. You'll know when the market is better. Get a job where you currently live.

I was laid off in September. Several of my friends came along with, unfortunately. One of my closest work pals is still there now but she's being slowly pushed out. She's still fully remote. They offered here a "promotion" to Account Executive, merged MB & SB, cut her pay in half and then asked her to relocated to the RR HQ. After thinking long and hard about it, she ultimately decided not to. The same day she told HR she would not be relocating, her boss put a 1x1 on her calendar and her reward points balance went to zero.
Dell is trying so hard to make it darn near impossible to enjoy working there anymore.
Best of luck to all of you that remain. Stay until they pay you to leave, but start getting the LinkedIn and resume coaching asap.

If they dont offer relocation costs forget it. Means they dont want to show anything in good faith.

Besides, Dell itself is a dwindling company with not much of a future. A company that has gleefully reneged on promises made to employees.

And you are considering betting the fam on Dell?

I think it’s their way of making you quit and not pay for severance. A previous teammate was asked to relocate by HR and he quit instead. Then the first round of layoffs followed after that week.

A friend did this - Before you move, ask what they will do about your relocation costs if you are cut in say les than two years. If they’re honest they will say that you eat the cost.
If they say anything else, get it in writing.

I was in this situation. I moved countries to a better paid position. Soon after the move, 80% of work was outsourced. Several people in my team were let go. All the drama and stress that comes with it, such as other teammates feeling threatened by me being replaced by me, which was the case, several highly paid colleagues got laid off.

That was three years ago, I’m still working, layoffs still happening.

You might be still in the team but are you ready to deal with everything else that comes with it?
