Thread regarding Intel Corp. layoffs

Question about severance

I'm not an Intel employee but we've been dealing with similar layoff issues lately and I sometimes check this page as well. I'm just trying to figure out if I got something right: Intel will not offer severance to a good part of employees who are about to be laid off? Did I misunderstand? That's my biggest nightmare and if Intel can do it, so can my company, and that petrifies me in this job market.

If you are feeling vulnerable:

  • get your resume out there if you haven't done so already
  • get copies of your documents that you may need like W2s, pay stubs, copies of you performance reviews if you feel like there is a potential for a law suit, etc... while you still have access to them
  • go investigate filing for unemployment and make sure you have all of the information they need, file on the first day that you are eligible, know how long you benefits will last, and understand any follow-on filing requirements so you don't lose benefits for missing out on providing the information
  • clean any of your personal items out of your office if you are working on site, cleanup your laptop to get rid of any personal information you may have accumulated
  • prepare yourself mentally for a long job search
  • create a budget to make sure your funds last you through the job search, get part time work if necessary to get you out of the house and active

Take action that benefits you instead of sitting around feeling like a victim, you will feel better...empowered since you have control of things.

@c0 the lack of communications is probably because the company is taking a much larger change in direction then most people expect and it is going to result in a lot of people spending their last 60 days winding down their orgs work. People who don't work to support the transition will just get walked out the door for cause and lose all of the remaining time they had before hitting the 60 day mark. After the notifications are made there will probably be a lot more communication on the new direction and priorities. It will be an awkward couple of months with the survivors and the soon to be ex-employees coexisting.

@a8 I think workers have become so accustomed to being offered a corp-defined package that they are having some issue dealing with a situation where the answer really is specific to each group.

The lack of communication is the difference between hearing something from corp, or hearing it from some group admin.

Also, shutting down groups has not been a big part of previous hunger games, and in a lot of those cases the employees are getting 60 days notice in lieu of a package. They need to keep a lot of people to wind down the business.

Performance related terminations of course do not get a package and many groups are getting aggressive with that form of reduction, to try to save as many of the higher performers as they can.

This is actually how it should always be, and a little sad that groups had to be forced to do the right thing. Expect a lot more of this in the future, now that the ability to keep slackers on the payroll has been eliminated.

@a8 Exactly, although why OP would ask people from another company about some hypothetical situation at some company he may or may not work for seems disingenuous at best.

It’s the same package as last year. Why mgmt is keeping that a secret is beyond me. It’s cruel to keep employees guessing about this. There’s no excuse for this cr-p.

OP, a package doesn't have to be any more than what is legally required. The WARN act requires you to get 60 days notification that your job is going away. So they can notify you and let you work for 9 more weeks or notify you and pay you for 9 weeks. Anything beyond this is up to the company. Tech companies in general seem to be moving toward significantly smaller severance packages. This includes firing people for performance or policy violations with zero severance and potentially zero unemployment benefits.
