Thread regarding Ford layoffs

RTO is just an attrition tactic

Nothing more, nothing less. As others have already pointed out, a full 5-day mandate will probably soon follow. Across the corporate world, RTO has become a relatively cheap and efficient way to reduce headcount without going through formal layoffs. Just think about how many people simply won’t be able to manage the commute, even if they wanted to stay, and will be forced to quit because of it.

Part of their plan is do nothing to improve the facilities because they estimated X% of people will leave the company

If they were going to mandate a return, take everyone's excuses away and make sure that the facilities are up to speed and can accommodate. Give everyone an assigned desk, reopen the cafeterias, make sure there are enough parking spaces, and turn the AC on. PDC is a complete pit - HVAC terrible, ceilings falling down, brown liquid dripping into office areas, overflowing garbage cans. It's like working in a third world country.

Ford does not care about you, individual. One way or the other, costs are being cut. Organization before individual, unless you are family or a**.

@e1 you got an email like that? How did they take your attendance, based on badge swipes? Are you located in US or Canada? Didn't hear of anything like that.

@at, I got that “you work less than 2days/ week” email too. Did you notice you can’t forward, print, or screenshot that email ? It’s definitely a scare tactic to get people to quit or comply….but they don’t want you to retain evidence in case of lawsuits

Here is my frustration. I thought I did pretty well under the full work from home set up. I actually believe I worked more and was more adaptable to late meetings etc (I typically start early). I fully acknowledge there are obviously people who abused the system.

There are aspects I like about the current 3 days/week and there are parts that I don’t like. The office set up is not great - noisy and distracting and people camp out in the one person rooms all day because of that. It also makes it harder to stay motivated on the “WFH” days because for us they are Fri/Mon (i.e bookend the weekend)

My problem is not going back 4 (or even 5) days - it’s whatever.

The concern is when they laid out the 3 days, at least in our area it was “Tues-Thurs”. I got an email today stating “since April 1 your attendance has been less than 2 days/week”. There have been 4 days I took a vacation/sick day and 4 days I worked from home on an “office” day (kid’s sick, etc). So 31/39 days (by my count, 35/39 if you take into account my “benefits”)

So I was supposed to make those days up on a M/Fri, but that was never laid out.

And I never felt guilty about the days I worked from home because my people leader is 100x worse than me.

Just treat us like human beings

I hate my RTO. My new office su-ks, small, too many people around. Low walls. I want to go back to my deck that overlooks the waterfront. I don’t work at either so at least make me happy

Some folks no longer have an office to return to. Ours was gutted during covid and everything is gone.

I was asked to return during covid and I asked about a desk and they said I could work out of my test vehicle. They did not tell me where to park so I just stayed home in my driveway.

It worked and my last day was Aug 22 2022. Lump sum is growing every day.

At GM, the policy only forces that you’re in person majority of the day, so people only stay from 8-12, or 7-11, and many leave at lunch to work the rest of their 3 in office days from home. My wife typically skips lunch which avoids the rush hour traffic later, and typically Warren is empty by 1-2pm with everyone else doing the same. Even with 5 instead of 3, I’d guess people would continue doing the same.
