I was laid off from Microsoft after 23 years, and I'm still going into the office. I feel responsible for my team and customers.

people feel attached to what they do, it is like your old car who you drove for 20 years.. or 10 .. it is just people. It is lots of mental attachment, that is why you see people go crazy at times during economic downturn and go to bars to get drunk. After 23 years, the toll will take on this guy is heavy. I have my old usps delivery man even step in office and forgot they retired just a day ago. All the colleges/community colleges will soon be filling with older students who hangs around. Seattle housing is going to burst, Starbucks will be filled with disgruntled people complaining, it is the same sh-t as Detroit during Massive car manufacturing layoff..
That guy isn't a masochist, he's an id--t. Jesus Christ man, take a 6 month sabbatical to refocus and recover. Anyone who's that committed ONCE THEY'VE BEEN FIRED has mental issues that they should use that 6 months to seek help for. Once a company says "see ya" to me, I'm the fu-k out the door. It's like getting a divorce and then...not leaving. That isn't heathy for either party.
In conclusion: that guy is a dum--ss.
He is likely the equivalent of brooks in Shawshank redemption. He doesn't know the outside world.
@OP Just highlighting that while it is crazy and most would walk he’s not in the United States where we allow employers to throw employees out like trash. His country respects the blue collar worker and forces Microsoft to keep him gainfully employed for 6 months following notice. So while he could just walk and get paid for 6 months he chose not to and stay busy while he figures out his next phase. And don’t let it be lost on anyone that even after the 6 months he’s going to step into a severance package that far exceeds anything a US worker would be offered. Welcome to America where the company you work for holds all the rights to do what they please with you.
