Advice from someone who left - take it or leave it

Since I’ve moved on from AEP, I figured I’d drop some thoughts for anyone in management who actually wants to fix what’s broken.

First off, rethink your pay structure. People aren’t going to stick around for below-market salaries while being expected to take on extra responsibilities. Pay needs to reflect workload and experience, not just your budget goals.

When it comes to advancement, start investing in your own people. Too many qualified folks get passed over while external hires are brought in with no understanding of the culture or team dynamics.

And please, drop the corporate fluff about culture. Most employees know it’s performative. If leadership wants to talk about trust and integrity, they should try practicing it.

Lastly, if there’s any hope of rebuilding morale, stop thinking short-term and start actually developing your teams. People want to grow, not just grind. And when they do speak up, maybe try listening instead of brushing it off.

Everything listed is perfectly reasonable, therefore written in vain. That said, corporate speak truly sets me off. I found it deeply offensive. If they would just drop that nonsense to begin with, it would already be a major improvement.

The part about outside hires really hits. Nothing more demoralizing than training someone who ends up being your boss just because they came from another company. Makes you wonder why you bother putting in the extra effort.

This is all good advice but narcissists won't hear it. It's too bad.

The new obscenely narrisisitic leadership of AEP does not comprehend what drives employees to serve their communities and customers. This dedication to selfless service is the antithesis of leaderships' self-serving vainglorious self-aggrandizement. AEP cannot survive this tension of polar opposites. The only way AEP can survive is for selfless virtuous employees to invest themselves in a predatory criminal enterprise and AEP employees have too much courage and integrity to submit to MOB rule. Or for AEP employees to drive out the virtue-less criminal leadership element that is destroying our company and our virtuous American Dream. Carl Icahn is enemy of every AEP employee and customer. We cannot allow him and his henchmen to tear down our legacy of service and sacrifice to enrich themselves at the expense of our customers and our families. Fight for the light of our collective hope that drives back the darkness of despair imposed by Carl Icahn.
