Vanderbilt University Medical Center will lay off up to 650 workers. The cuts are due to federal budget reductions. CEO Jeff Balser said Washington’s actions are hurting both research and patient care. “These actions impact our operating results,” he told staff in a video message.
The layoffs will affect about 2% of the center’s 45,000 employees. Most of the jobs cut are in research, admin, and support roles. John Howser, a spokesperson, said the move is “extremely difficult.” The hospital will give severance and other help to those impacted.
This comes as part of a $300 million budget cut for the new fiscal year. That’s up from $250 million announced in March. Federal proposals may lead to even deeper cuts. Some could double the expected revenue losses.
Vacant roles will stay open. VUMC will continue to hire clinical staff for the Jim Ayers Tower. The 180-bed tower is expected to open in fall 2025. Despite the layoffs, the hospital says it will keep serving its 3.5 million patients.
Balser thanked staff for finding ways to save money. He said many have helped by redistributing work. Affected employees will be notified over the next few days.
