Kansas - the long-term economic impact of layoffs

Kansas is experiencing a surge in federal and state layoffs.

At the federal level, nearly 6,000 IRS employees work in Kansas City. About 1,000 of them are probationary and expected to lose their jobs. These cuts are part of a broader federal workforce reduction under the Trump administration. IRS employees were told to prepare for layoffs based on their hire date, regardless of performance.

Uncertainty has gripped the IRS center, one of the city’s largest employers. Workers were warned to keep personal documents handy and prepare to leave on short notice. The layoffs, arriving in the middle of tax season, are expected to delay refunds and other essential services.

Beyond the IRS, the broader Kansas City federal workforce is bracing for more cuts. Almost 30,000 people in the area work for the federal government. Economists say every federal job supports another in the local economy. Losing 3,000 jobs could mean 6,000 total lost positions regionally.

At the state level, Kansas has lost another 56 public health jobs. These layoffs followed a $33 million cut in federal health and mental health grants. Governor Laura Kelly said the cuts came as Kansas battles measles and tuberculosis outbreaks. The lost jobs included key roles in epidemiology, disease tracking, and vaccine outreach.

A separate private-sector layoff is also hitting Kansas. Veyer, a distribution company in Edwardsville, is closing its facility and cutting 77 jobs. The company says the move is part of a broader cost-cutting strategy.

With both federal and state cuts happening simultaneously, Kansas faces job losses on multiple fronts. Public health, tax processing, and distribution services will all feel the strain.

The long-term economic impact could be severe, especially for Kansas City and rural areas that depend heavily on government jobs and grants.
