Thread regarding California layoffs

Cali Cuts Coming????

California is staring down a $12 billion budget deficit, and the reality is beginning to take shape // layoffs may soon be on the table for some state-funded sectors.

Governor Newsom’s revised budget, unveiled last month, keeps overall spending flat but proposes steep reductions in health care programs, climate initiatives and higher education funding. While some areas like Medi-Cal and undocumented adult coverage are seeing major cuts, the University of California and CSU systems are also facing smaller but still significant reductions. CSU, in particular, has signaled that layoffs are likely.

This is all happening against a backdrop of rising health costs and economic instability driven in part by federal tariffs. The deficit isn’t just a one-time issue either. Analysts are projecting annual gaps of $20 billion or more in the years ahead unless structural changes are made.

If you work in education, social services, or any area funded by the state, it’s a good time to stay informed and talk with your teams about contingency plans. Legislators have until the end of June to finalize the budget. Hard decisions are coming either way.
