# Nearly 1,500 jobs getting axed in Chicago area this summer - here's the brutal breakdown
Posted in r/Chicago 2 hours ago
Just saw the latest WARN notices from the state and it's pretty rough out there. Almost 1,500 people in the Chicago area are about to lose their jobs in the next few weeks.
For those who don't know, companies with 75+ employees have to give 60 days notice before mass layoffs thanks to the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act. So these numbers are official.
Here's where the cuts are happening:
Momence Packing Company (Kankakee County) - 300 workers
- Johnsonville is moving operations to other states
- Workers get pay and benefits through August at least
- Whole facility is shutting down
CareerBuilder + Monster Worldwide (Loop) - 400 workers by Aug 4
- Closing their entire US headquarters in downtown Chicago
- This one stings because it's right in the heart of the city
Ametek Inc. (St. Charles) - 167 workers
- Electronics company closing the whole facility
- Another complete shutdown
Bristol Myers Squibb (Libertyville) - 133 workers
- Viral vector production facility closing
- Pharma industry taking hits
Cleveland Cliffs (Riverdale) - ~300 workers
- Steelmaker closing three facilities total
- Two in Pennsylvania, one here in Riverdale
Oak View Group at McCormick Place - 203 workers
- Venue management contract got canceled
- McCormick Place is huge for Chicago events
But wait, there's more. The Peoria Journal-Star says it's actually closer to 2,100 layoffs across 14 businesses statewide. That includes Carle Health in Champaign cutting 612 people.
The bigger picture is even worse:
- 536 people got layoff notices in just the last 30 days
- Nearly 5,000 people affected by layoffs in the last 90 days
This is happening while companies are required to give advance notice, so there's probably more coming that we don't know about yet.
Anyone else seeing this in their industry? The WARN notices don't lie - these are real numbers from real companies filing with the state.
For people asking about unemployment benefits - start filing as soon as you get your notice. Don't wait until your last day.
