Thread regarding Dell Inc. layoffs

Pleading not to layoff

I've had sleepless nights for the past few months thinking about the lay-offs... to the extent that I'm taking medications now.

I've got a mortgage and a new born and I can't afford to be laid off. Every week I'm asking for 1:1 with my manager and pleading with them to protect me. My role is easy, I hardly have any responsibility and that's why it's such a great role for me. Is there anything else I need to do to make sure my role doesn't get impacted?

I appreciate all the great advice

I'm not sure why everyone employed at Dell isn't trying to leave? No one is safe. My husband got laid off after we bought a house and he was out of work for a year! I got a new job the moment he got hired and we are both paid way more now and live with less fear. Layoffs can ALWAYS happen but now that we are both at less chaotic companies that are way more conservative with their spending we are much happier.

If I were you, I'd start looking for a new job now. It can take a year to find the right next role and it's always easier to change jobs before you get laid off rather than after.

I could not understand why do you expect to continue to be employed if you have no responsibilities..

Start circulating your resume

It's been made very clear over the past couple of years that performance doesn't have a lot to do with these cuts. They seem to be completely arbitrary and made by people with no direct knowledge of each individual.

You can hope for the best, but plan for the worst. Update the resume. Network with your contacts. Start searching for jobs you might be interested in. Maybe even pull the trigger on a few applications.

Best case, nothing happens. But worst case, at least you've already started the process.

Cleanup your resume and start looking for something else outside of Dell. It’s painful necessary processes. Do it now while your still employed, gives you negotiating leverage.

"bringing innovation"

Pft dell wouldn't know what to do with innovation if someone brought it to the company as they haven't innovate anything in the last 20 years or more. They brought in innovators when purchasing EMC but then proceeded to drive most of them out.

You’d be the first I let go. Pleading to stay and focusing way too much time and effort on that instead of doing your job and bringing innovation to the company. Make your manager look good - don’t plead to their empathy, if in management they don’t have any, just ambition.

Develop an exit plan or brace yourself mentally. This company prioritizes cost-cutting through outsourcing to lower-wage countries over valuing its employees. You're seen as expendable, likely to be discarded when you're no longer useful to them.

Ha, like they give a rats butt about you, your mortgage or your baby. A colleague of mine got laid off recently with his wife being pregnant with their 4th child. No compassion was shown at all.

It is a numbers game. If you have no responsibilities start asking your boss for some, and show your worth. If you don't most likely you will get hit if you don't bring any value to the table. Good luck!

Directors and above decide who is on the list.

Your manager has nothing to do with it. The guy above him likely has nothing to do with it either.

Good luck.
