Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

The coaching club

Have you noticed that most high potential individuals all behave identically?

Same demeanor, same vocabulary, same "calmness", same house in the suburbs, same cars, same spouses, same hobbies.

Being high potential is akin to being brain washable and coachable into this specific ExxonMobil executive type, the diplomat/know-it-all/top-down/conservative/stay-at-home-spouse/american/white male.

Female and non-whites are brained washed alike, with the additional ingredient that they are groomed into believing that the diversity they bring matters to the bottom line.

It's funny to see some of those struggling with imposter syndrome. Imposter they are indeed, a cast of extras and bon-playable characters with the only role of maintaining a facade of virtuosity and openness.

Funny also that those are called "high potential individuals", when their main skill is, precisely, their eagerness and easiness to surrender their individuality and yield to the ExxonMobil collective type.

No training amd security for most managers and supv because they are simply not “HiPos” — they are assigned tough jobs justifying decisions from the top even they disagree with. They feel insecure, as a result turn into even worse managers for their subordinates. They try but an en empty pot can only give so much to others if they are not full themself.

But the HiPos have a sense of security, rather an arrogant air about them. Becuse whatever mistake they make they will still be assessed outstanding. Just think how that feels like in context of assessment. That is power, for these sociopaths. That arrogance and confidence is how you know someone is an HiPo, or even worse, is why they became a HiPo.

If arrogance and blind confidence are the criteria, then that explains why we have such a toxic culturr and ZERO down to earth, humble leaders who once in a while that they make mistakes as well.

At the core, they are all simply greedy, sociopathic losers

This post is so spot on! There's no chance for anyone else to succeed here if you dont belong to the chosen group no matter how many mountains you move.

Yeah its called "coaching". some happened on a conf call, some happened in a huddle room, some happened in a hotel, some happened in a bedroom.

reminds me of an expat lady that went to wash her clothes at her sponsors place. im sure a lot of coaching happened there.

Great point @ev+1jwkmtvbx. The conflation of leadership with their own behaviors by the walking, talking hot garbage in those roles is astonishing, yet at the same time, unsurprising. They won most of the money and have perpetually been told they are special and important. Why would they give any further thought to anyone but themselves?

@ec

Thank you for your insider information.

The perception of a leader?

You guys are not perceived as "leaders", but as yes-men, brainwashed, cool, calm, and collected, takers.

True leaders care about others beyond themselves.

Sounds like you've been brainwashed pretty nicely if you believe that your behaviors are those of a leader.

You guys are not

As a wanna be hipo - there is absolutely feedback that you need to talk and behave a certain way. No emotions. Cool calm and collected. Folks who can’t adapt are ejected. At a certain level feedback is not about how technical or strategic you are - it is how well do you maintain the perception of a leader.

This is definitely true. I really see it in the US in voice intonation and pronunciation, apparently learned at a supervisor training and carried into the HiPo culture. I also love the non-southerners who start saying "y'all". Gee wh-z, get some self-respect

I don’t think they are same because they are coached, they are same because people at top pick the ones similar to them.

I am curious what they will do without Australia and UK as a pool after divesting both.

Very good analysis and description.
Please - find a job where that's recognized.

That’s today’s America. Been seeing this for years. The same vocabulary was very disturbing to me when I started noticing. All I’ve learned after all these years is if your boss wants you to rob banks and kidnap babies you better be all in. Having integrity and actually running things how you would run your house you will be sacrificed.

Nails it. They all live in (expensive) little boxes on the hillside, little boxes made of ticky tacky and pick from the same small subset of luxury. Personality: nil. Creativity: nil. Conscience or morality other than personal enrichment: nil.

This is exactly it. There is nil diversity, irrespective of the organisation you're in. The powerful all have to be identical to perpetuate the lies.

Sleep, don't question authority, obey.

That's the XOM cult. Same boys club at site, you need to be in the in-crowd to be invited to thier weekend activities. Of course, discussion of role changes get brought up during these hangouts.
