What keeps you going?

I am tired of it all and not convinced the grass is any greener anywhere else.

Like previous post, I left mainly because of a cr-ppy manager. Could be the same feller.

A small man both stature and character, whose leadership style relied on condescension, insecurity, and intimidation.

The grass is always greener when

  • you learn new skills and you like what you do
  • you work in an environment where you contributions are valued
  • you don’t have to worry about unhealthy competition and toxic behaviors
  • when you are fairly compensated.

I just look at my retirement savings. That gives me comfort on some days when the market is doing well. As for leaving honestly it’s all about who your boss is. Company doesn’t matter much. It’s your direct boss. So many cr-ppy bosses. You just gotta find a good one and even in a bad company you’ll be happy.

What keeps me going is KNOWing this is all just a simulation I personally chose for character development. I’m basically the main character in a cosmic telenovela. Stay tuned for next week’s episode!

I left. I now make significantly more money—and I’m no longer being micromanaged, gaslit, or told my neutral facial expression is “unpleasant” because I wasn’t smiling enough for a male supervisor’s comfort.

I’m also no longer being bullied on a weekly basis by a man small in both stature and character, whose leadership style relied on condescension, insecurity, and intimidation.

Working in an affiliate is reasonable, provides normal working relationships (except for "Functional" interference) and good money. If you're based on the campus with minimal hope getting out then just leave and sort it later. The place has become so weird and abnormal it's not worth your time and life.

I’m getting to close to the 15/55 to head out. That’s first goal. Next goal is to be ready to make a jump to some other things I want to do work wise. Paycheck of course. If you’re not in an LT position soon or a critical skill with sponsorship you really need to think about heading out. This place isn’t going to ever change no matter what catastrophe happens in the us or globally.

Other than the horrifically bad PA system, I like my job and coworkers. I know too many people at other O&G companies with worse benefits who will work longer and have worse lay off concerns. I’d take a major salary hit to go to a competitor so I fill out the WAEM survey and hold hope at some point the PA BS changes.

It is definitely not any less green out there. There is always an amount of bs and dysfunction at a company. Exxon just takes it to the max. I have worked at many different companies and can tell you it is better at other companies. It can also be worse because of benefits and pay. Exxon is one of the worst places to work if you are not liked, part of the in group or a hipo favorite. You will never know if you don't try.
