Narcissist People Leader Makes Own Rules

I am one of THREE people on my team. I have one coworker who is the same level as me, and then our manager. Myself and my colleague are women, our manager is a cis white man.
Our manager is so much of a narcissist and is obsessed with making himself look good and get brownie points from his supervisor, even if it’s at a detriment to my coworker and I that he makes rules specifically for us, that he himself doesn’t even follow. Here is a recent example:

If my coworker and I asked to have today as a work from home day because it is a half day anyway on a holiday weekend and we don’t have any work actively happening, we would’ve had to provide a play by play of exactly what work we would be doing from home.
Meanwhile, this man gave himself a work from home day yesterday so he could work on his outfit and get out to NJ at 1PM to get in line for the Beyoncé show (his 5th time seeing her in a year, mind you.)
I had to attend a funeral for a family friend last week and he made me take the day PTO.
I am going to hand him a scathing resignation letter next week, I have had enough. May the bridge I burn light my way.

@OP 1st of all this person is your superior. He has the right to deny you a half day to work from home. And as far as bereavement days they don’t cover friends so of course you have to take a PTO day just like the rest of us would the fact that you called him, a cis man let me know right at the beginning of your little temper, tantrum exactly what your comments would be about. You feel like you’re so put upon and you are not getting what someone else is getting and you deserve this that and the other thing so I don’t think he’s going to be upset over whatever type of resignation that you give him good luck at your next position maybe look for somewhere a little more DEI driven if there’s any of those companies left because that was an awful initiative to begin with

The OP stated she was made to take PTO day for a funeral. It is the employee's discretion as to when they use PTO. She could have taken an unpaid day off if she liked. With that empathy does not come into play. Always sympathy for ANYONES loss but sorry HR does not pay bereavement for friends.

I think OP mentioned it as a way to show the power imbalance. The people leader has privilege and power not only as a manager, but as a white man with authority over two women.
Also, death is death no matter who the relationship? Maybe have a little empathy

Around 70% of corporate colleagues that work at the NYC office are able to complete their tasks from home.
They recently started requiring all corporate colleagues that aren’t customer facing to come into the office, myself 3-4 days a week (some only 2, depends on what team you’re in) so they can justify the energy costs of the building. I am a designer and can 100% do my entire job at home.
A lot of those that are against letting employees do their tasks from home when it can be completed just as well if not even more efficiently I’ve noticed tend to be more “traditional” in their thinking and values about most things in the world. It is 2025, times are very different.

I’m 100% with you on this one, not the best way to show leadership. Also, making a more pleasing environment goes a long way. As long as work is on time and of good quality, nothing else matters. It’s 2025. The critics here have drank way too much coolaid.

Don't give this guy the letter describing the issues send that to his boss and HR. Let them ask him about his actions. If you give it to him they wont know your concerns and why you left. Most likely he has already told them your a negative colleague. There's alot of people leaders like him.

What does gender and race have too do with any of it? Sounds like the problem is looking back at you in your mirror. Furthermore paid bereavement days do not apply for the funeral of a friend.

There are so many questions with the above statement.
My integrity matters. If I’m not actively working I don't expect to get paid unless I use one of my benefitted PTO days. Your manager should follow company policy with regards to work from home days and lead by example. If there is “no work actively happening” why would you expect to work from home and not be accountable for that time?
It sounds like work from home days are being taken advantage of.
If there is no work actively happening, why haven’t payroll hours been cut to save $$$.
If you feel an HR case is warranted, open one.
And an FYI, your scathing letter of resignation will satisfy no one but you. If you want to burn your bridge that’s on you. Macy’s doesn’t care. Everyone is replaceable.
