Hey All,
I'm a highly motivated graduate engineer joining Dell. Heard lots of great things and some not so, especially in the last year or so.
I'm highly ambitious and have a can-do attitude to do whatever it takes. Can anyone give estimates on how soon I can get promoted to middle/upper management? My dream is to run the business, so any tips would be welcome.

@b2 Most likely Dell would offer less than 100K. Grossly underpays.
Keep working long hours, do more work, take initiatives, pick up leading employee engagement to prove how Dell is, and write extensive self-reviews of your achievements.

You wouldn't get a promotion but will get laid off within a year. Wait and see. Trying to sacrifice your time and effort for Dell is like volunteering to put your head into a lion's mouth.

If you're serious and actually a new grad then get a new job literally anywhere else as soon as you can.
I wasted 5 years of my life there when I could have been an officer in the Navy or Air Force.
I'm happily employed now, but Dell is a good place to waste years of your life.

Work hard. I5 - 9 promotion every 2-3 years. 9 to 10 is avg 10 year gap.
You can accelerate 5 to 9 by applying and moving between roles advertised internal job market.
Promotion in job is very hard above i8.
Find a good manager who can mentor and advocate for you.
Dell 100k employees. If you feel stuck, you can always move about.
Don’t feel worried layoffs. Work hard, build skills, network, stay ambitions.

I worked at Dell for 9 years and have had absolutely zero opportunities for promotion.
My advice is to run, not walk, to the nearest employment agency and take anything they offer you over Dell.

your post makes me sad. Im 65 started at EMC in 1993. Before that I work 10 years in Mainframe storage. Your enthusiasm is admirable but misplaced. Dell doesn't give a d%# about you and your dreams and ambition. Be careful and be fooled.
In my experience, maybe it was different in past generations and years of dell but, it takes SOOO long to get promoted here. There was a 2-3 year period where all I heard was "we are under a hiring freeze. No internal movement or promotions." And I've only been here for 4 years! Su-ks a-s

highly motivated, my N, they going to use you and drop you. as a new grad there are PLENTY of other options.
on a side note, if you're coming in as an intern and then given a FT role, your salary should not be less than $115k+ in austin.
if you have talent you must run away from Dell, you would be more appreciate and you will got your ambitious goals in a little start up with all the future in front.
Dell is a dead global supply logistic business nothing more. In that subject Dell usually was a leader but now cutting costs policy became it less competitive when serving customer as before.
Don’t listen to any of these negative boomer trolls. I admire your ambition dude, you can have a stellar career at Dell. Go forth and conquer

This has got to be a joke right? No new grad in their right mind would take a job at Dell. It’s great for old timers to wait out their retirement. But if you want to start a career, this is t the place. This is the place to end it.
This is the worst place to ask this question. Try glass door. Most of the people here are waiting for a layoff and are very unhappy they keep hiring new people while actively laying off older more tenured people with higher paychecks. Don't rise to fast or you may find yourself laid off too cause you cost too much to keep around.
You can progress up to a managers role if you are off shore and would be responsible for an off shore team.
Summary....upward mobility is highly dependent on what country you live in.
Just focus on doing your job and not rocking the boat. Get the lay of the land, get some experience and see where you are in a few yrs.
I’m not going to lie use Dell but try to get on the best teams here if you can so you can gain a lot of skills. And actively look for a job. You don’t want to be here. Also start on your personal branding ASAP and start different revenue resources.
If getting advice about upward progression from a layoff site is your first best thought, find a yourself a mentor and run all your first best thoughts by them before acting.
