Malone University Layoffs

Malone University is undergoing a so-called “transformation,” which, unsurprisingly, begins with laying off nearly 30 employees under the guise of “reallocating services.” President Gregory Miller announced the plan on May 19, and while the press release spins it as progress, the reality is that essential staff-like mental health counselors, campus safety officers, and even the campus nurse-were among those cut. The Director of Spiritual Formation, an ordained pastor, was also let go, despite unofficially filling the campus pastor role that’s been vacant since 2010. Alumni are responding with embarrassment and anger, citing the university’s ongoing decline in both student support and inclusivity. With enrollment now hovering around 1,300, the school’s decision to eliminate critical services seems less like strategic change and more like slow-motion collapse. And as some point out, past actions-like firing a professor for being LGBTQ-likely did little to attract students who care about basic human rights. Malone’s “transformation” appears to be little more than a retreat from the values it once claimed to uphold, wrapped in a memo and delivered with a straight face.
