@2ta, you are correct, but I would caution you to not fall into the traps that those encouraging tribalism use with their arguments and use of language.

“ Vicki is the first female to run a large oil company, and that in itself proves Oxy is not a race or gender based company.”

Not necessarily. The fact that a female leads a company doesn’t prove that they are not gender based more than a male leading a company proves that they are. In fact, some speculate she was promoted to her position because of her gender, not despite of it. That would prove that the company is a gender based company. So a person’s gender proves nothing.

“ I am sure if they had the educational and professional backgrounds they would be right there with the races that do, and part of Oxy executive management.”

The management team is not made up of races, but individuals. Promoting people based on their merit means we stop looking at the racial outcome, whether it is better or worse than it was before.

You have the right conclusions, but don’t let your arguments be based on any outcome that measures race or gender, or you open yourself up to being judged by those same outcomes.

@2e0+1jvqa3qmr You make a great point, and even if they were all white males Vicki picks her executive team. She can pick all white males or all white females, but she has picked a cross-section of professionals from various races and genders. The all white male argument does not pertain to Oxy. Vicki is the first female to run a large oil company, and that in itself proves Oxy is not a race or gender based company. Certain races do not have the techincal representation based on not going into engineering, science, and other professional careers Oxy has to offer, and that leads to a thin talent pool for them. I am sure if they had the educational and professional backgrounds they would be right there with the races that do, and part of Oxy executive management. There is no way Oxy can be considered an all white male company.

I agree. Ray Irani was the best CEO the company has ever had.

@1tf, since the inception of the company?? Ever heard of Ray Irani? I feel embarrassed for you.

@1tf, let’s see. The CEO is not a white male. The CFO is not a white male. The GC is not a white male. The Corporate Secretary is not a white male. The VP of D&I is not a white male. The VP of Environmental is not a white male. Do you ever check something to be true before you write it down?

It's hilarious to hear white males complain about diversity, especially once you look at the executive team and notice they're while males! Has been since the inception of the company, so stop your white tears, throw away your white privilege card and actually show the value that you bring to the company.

This is absolute trash and you don’t work here. You post something inflammatory and watch the expected people jump on the bandwagon. Either that or you are truly not deserving and looking to blame who you think is the weakest link for your own incompetence.

@b5+1jvqa3qmr, you know you must be getting under the skin of the whiners and complainers when you’re accused of being HR on this site. Whatever you think about VH, back it up with facts and examples. “You must be HR” is getting old and reflects the thinking of a twelve year old. Try a real argument sometime. Or you could simply accuse me of being HR too.

You need to be visible and your value to Oxy understood by the managers/executive that have influence on your career. Impressing your immediate team and manager may not be good enough for more senior positions.

@OP promotions have nothing to do with DEI or skin color. You need to be adding value to the company, and maybe you don't add as much as you think. Follow up with your manager to see what are your blind spots and what you need to do, proactively, to get a promotion. Sitting warminf a chair will not bring any promotions unless you are a top performer.

@ac+1jvqa3qmr: It speaks volumes when our HR is getting paid to lurk and respond on forums like this. Our company doesn’t need a tweak — it needs a full-blown reboot.

It has been a white, male dominated industry for the 40 years I worked in it. Was the same for my father's generation. Saw some movement in the 2010's to be a little more inclusive but it was just window dressing. Being tall, male ,good looking and having an extravert personality is the golden ticket. Fact of life.

Hopefully oxy gets rid of DEI now that DJT had banned it on the Fed level. It’s complete BS that this is forced down our throats.
