Thread regarding Cisco Systems Inc. layoffs

Those of you who left TAC, how did you get out to your next opportunity?

Feel like I am stuck here forever. Got my certifications and learned a lot in my field. I’m a high performing engineer, genuinely care about helping customers and solving hard problems, trying to skill myself as much as possible. I’ve gone above and beyond and I work in the security space. Years ago all former TAC people told me that it’s easy to hop out once you did your couple years and for some reason it seems harder than ever to switch internally or hit the job market and get any bites. Many people who left told me the world is an entirely different place than what you do here and that it’s sort of like a culture shock. Even networking (socially) is just a patient waiting game of hoping someone throws a bone to get you out.

How to get out? Day trade.

Was in TAC early 2000s. Left eight years ago. Retired three years ago. Early 50s.

It can be done.

  1. Do NOT be afraid to be LRed, though many have been. Update skills and keep searching.

If you go above and beyond in TAC, you will get burned out and hate your life (guaranteed).

  1. Do NOT schedule more than 2 calls during Backlog hours.
  2. Do NOT work on more than 1 issue under the same SR.
  3. Do NOT log in (webex, csone, outlook, etc) before your shift.
  4. Do NOT stay after your shift (if on call, HO as soon as your shift ends).
  5. Do NOT be a yes-man to your manager and teammates.
