Thread regarding BP PLC layoffs

UK/US Expats?

How, in this time when we are seeing extreme cost cutting, does the business justify sending UK or US employees on expat assignments? Are you seriously telling me that there is no one in the region equally qualified?

A long time ago, I learned that bp will only offer expat positions to those who could be elevated to upper management positions. I don't think that it otherwise benefitted the company. I had also learned the hard lesson when I had declined such a move. It did hurt my career. What can I say? I'm retired and I'm able to move on to do other things. Hang in there all.

Similarly, there are quite a large no. of uk expats in the usa (e.g. projects). I think they "localised" a few as well. Just imagine how efficient it would be if they switched them and brought the usa expats home. Anyway bp is a british company no matter how they try to paint it ... .

Typical bp behavior. Give cushy expat jobs to people they have decided will be “leaders” some day.

There is a significant number of expats from the US in the UK and many group leaders+, still baffles, esp with the perks of housing, school fees, car, bills etc and double tax in both countries, certainly a bubble which needs to burst if we need think smarter on taking costs out the system !
