Thread regarding Citrix Systems Inc. layoffs

Is joining a startup a good idea right now?

I don't want to jump from one job with no job security to another, but the best offer I got so far is from a startup. Considering the turmoil that's been happening in that sector as well, I'm not sure if I should accept it or not. The fact they are hiring should be a good sign, but then, so is Citrix...

A lot of potential with a startup, but risk as well. Do a bit of research, if you van beloeve in it might be worth it. If you van not make sense of it, avoid it

Good idea, compared to what? You honestly believe that there is job security in staying at CSG, while the business outlook continues to decline for this abomination of unrelated and unsuccessful leftovers from a bygone era of enterprise software.

Please explain your thinking. Truly, I'm puzzled

I've worked for several startups in the past. My advice - if you take the job, don't be surprised to be looking for a new one within a year.

Right now, a Series B startup can be a better place to land than a 35 year old established company with declining market share and poor leadership/vision - just do your research and make sure they're legit (they actually have secured funding, they actually have a vision, go to market strategy, growth plan, etc.). The way I see it is that job security isn't guaranteed anywhere anymore in these employment market and economic conditions. Always have an exit strategy. Always be building your network. Have multiple income streams.

How successful has the startup been at raising funds so far? Do they have a viable business plan based on actual revenue generation in the near- to mid-term? The higher cost of money makes it more difficult for zombie companies and unicorns, but the class of investors who invest in startups won’t be too deterred by that if the startup has a solid plan and good leadership.

It's not like you are in a stable situation now. :) What do you have to lose?
