Thread regarding Medtronic Inc. layoffs

What time will the blood bath start this week?

Based on a number of VP comments it is pretty clear our group is getting let go. Does anyone know if they will be doing the actually notifications in groups or individually? Is the plan to also do reorganizations at the same time? Will those let go be blocked from being hired into open positions?

Diabetes inside alone lost close to 100 or more. Unclear what layoffs in the field look like. Really sad and hard day for inside workers. They expected you to keep working as they pulled more and more people into the dreaded meeting. Supervisors eventually did ask if everyone was okay. Medtronic has ki-ler severance packages, so these people were well taken care of. Still a hard day.

Had a meeting yesterday (5/12/25) and a quality manager informed everyone that “apparently someone felt my position was redundant” and that 6/6/25 would be his last day. We are so under resourced in our group it’s comical… and they just keep cutting… not a good thing when you’re making med devices that are critical to saving lives.

Replying to this message, I’m in SOU and I was RIF’d.

“I have a “Business Update” meeting with my boss tomorrow morning. It’s only the 2 of us, no HR. Any chance I’m not being laid off?”

Previous poster stated the meeting they were in had HR rep that wasn’t on the meeting invite.

Which country and OU are you?”

I wouldn't go by if there is an HR rep on the invite. Teams Premium license gives user the ability to "Hide Attendees" so they are probably added you just can't see it. It's the Email Subject to look for.

What a cr-p way to keep running a business...walking on eggshells for Q4 in fear of that email is bs. GM needs to be gone.

When I was laid off last year, it was only my manager's manager (Director) with Business Update in the subject line and no other attendees. The next morning, the HR rep showed up on call. I'd say if you got that email for tomorrow morning then you will likely be RIFd.

The company is a slave to its "dividend aristocrats" BS.
80% of shareholders are institutions & they're milking the dividends to keep their "moderate/low growth" funds on track.

We buyback shares to hold the share price line and then spend spend spend on dividends.
The board has too many marketing/finance background MBAs.
Hardware (i.e medical devices)needs real engineering and technical appreciation.

Investing in organic or inorganic RD is part of the way out.
Being more aggressive (i.e salary) with talent is part of the way out.
Being more aggressive with demanding higher caliber work is part of the way out
Offloading weak growth businesses is part of the way out

Good luck all, may you get a soft landing if needed!

"If you have a meeting this week with a director/VP, would you see HR listed in calendar appt?"

In my case they somehow hid the HR person, so I was a bit confused as to why the director set up the meeting. However, at 10am today I saw " has started the meeting Business Update"

To the person asking about the UK redundancy process, I'm not sure. I've never dealt with this process before. What I've heard so far is that it's based on performance and there is, in theory at least, some room for negotiation.

Here's the generic copy from the letter I received:

I am writing to confirm that the Company is having to consider potential redundancies,
and this may affect your position. As was explained in the meeting, unfortunately, your role is at risk of redundancy.
The purpose of consultation is to explore ways of avoiding or reducing the number of
redundancies. It is also an opportunity for you to make any suggestions or proposals as to how redundancies could be avoided or minimized, as well as raising any other concerns
or questions.
I understand that this is a very difficult time for you and will consult with you throughout the process to discuss with you how you may be affected by the proposal and to give you the opportunity to put forward your comments for consideration before a final decision is made.
If your position is made redundant, the Company will discuss with you any internal
alternative employment opportunities.
I would like to thank you for your continued hard work during this difficult period.

To the poster in the UK…how will they determine which one of you has to go? Seems like an odd process and not like the U.S where the invite will be sent and they tell you your position has been eliminated. We have been worried all weekend waiting for the invite. So sorry you are having to go through this too.

I'm in the surgical OU. A "Business Update" meeting between me, a senior engineering director and four other senior individual contributors and was added to my calendar on Friday. I had the weekend to stew in my juices and when I saw an unfamiliar name in the call I knew it was HR, I knew what was happening.

My team is based in the UK so I can't speak for the procedure elsewhere. In my case they effectively said "one of you has to go". The regulations they're no doubt following must have been created in the interests of transparency and due process, but frankly the way it was done feels like a dystopian gameshow.

Meetings in multiple plants will be called at 12 O'clock GMT today along with an official press release that will also be released at the same time. I have good contact with a Senior Director, and from what they are saying its going to be a bloodbath. It all depend on the OU. Trumps Tariffs, will be given as one of the driving factors apparently, for the companies decision.
