Odd layoffs going on in Western Canada tight now, notably those who have been on the “bench” for awhile like 1-2 months on it. Peers in Vancouver and Calgary, for example, magically went MIA because no work could be found for them the last couple of months. Seems valid considering the CGI client-internal opportunities portal mainly comprises or Eastern Canada listings and US ones. To make it worse, most opps require staff on-site now which limits options for those on the bench to take on work outside their city. If you aren’t looking elsewhere and think you’re safe because you are assigned to an engagement right now, consider applying outside. Definitely recommend for those on projects ending soon or haven’t heard anything from their opps persons. Don’t wait. These CGI directors and upper management people could care less about you so long as their numbers look good at the end of the day. Feel bad for anyone recently hired in Western Canada the last few months. Probably first ones to get axed soon. Such cr-ppy workplace.

Can’t comment much for Calgary or other WBU mentioned by OP. However, can confirm folks getting let go in Vancouver office. Might be due to BC government contracts being paused or cancelled the last while. I know a number of team members have been benched for quite awhile, including myself. As OP suggested, consider applying outside CGI instead of relying on internal intranet postings or Opportunity Persons to find you work. The latter hasn’t been doing a great job at finding anything for us either. Can tell Eastern Canada Opps Persons are making efforts to find business and work for staff out there just based on the number of opps available out there. Western Canada opportunities are like null the past few months, so clearly Directors here don’t give a hoot. Please look elsewhere if you haven’t started. The only things these Directors and VPs care about are their bonuses, business unit numbers, and the CGI stock price. If they’re bleeding money by staff being on the bench, they won’t think twice about cutting you off the balance sheet. We’re all just line items at the end of the day for these people. They don’t care about those below them.
