Thread regarding Dell Inc. layoffs

Don’t Settle: Take a Stand Against RTO and Demand What You Deserve

Stop accepting the narrative that we have a choice but to conform. Your actions matter. You’re not alone. There are countless others in the same situation, feeling the same frustrations.

We don’t have to sacrifice our well-being, productivity, and happiness just to meet outdated expectations. Remote work isn’t a luxury, it’s a necessity for many of us to thrive. The old model doesn’t work for everyone. If we don’t take a stand now, nothing will change.

Don’t let fear of confrontation stop you. Many of us are afraid of rocking the boat or losing our jobs. We can still meet our professional obligations and deliver results without being forced into a one-size-fits-all office culture.

Be bold. Be unapologetic. Together, we can push for better, more flexible solutions that work for everyone. We have the power to change the narrative.

"I’ve been on calls with JC and he has ambitions to get rid of another ~20k people...It’s not a reflection on your ability, commitment or value - it’s the sad reality of running a profitable company"

First off "ambitions" to do mass layoffs? How twisted is that? Not "regrettably, it looks like another large-scale layoff needs to happen". Ambitions. Sounds like he's chomping at the bit

Second, let's address "it’s the sad reality of running a profitable company" So, there are only two statuses a company can be in - laying people off as fast as they come in, or unprofitable? Not a one outside of those? Bootlicker.

Lucky you, which country?

Dell already reached 100,000 employees. That would leave us with 80,000 employees.

The conspiracy theorists are actually right on this one.

The RTO mandate has only one purpose - create an excuse to reduce the workforce without having to pay redundancy in countries where the company thinks it can get away with it.

I’m fortunate to work in a role and a country where none of the RTO stuff is enforceable so I’ve just ignored it all. It’s not a “one size fits all” policy as it’s illegal in some countries to try force employees who have remote contract agreements to RTO.

I’ve been on calls with JC and he has ambitions to get rid of another ~20k people. It’s not personal, it’s what the company thinks it needs to do. Great people have already been lost and more great folks will go. It’s not a reflection on your ability, commitment or value - it’s the sad reality of running a profitable company.

100% agree with the OP - stand up for yourself and don’t allow yourself to be a victim of corporate politics. If your time at Dell is done for whatever reason, make sure you are compensated, take a package and move on.

Folks who have been let go for non-compliance with rto, did you still get severance and was it still:

• Two months of base salary
• One additional week of pay for each full year of service, up to a maximum of 26 weeks
• Approximately 75% of the prorated annual bonus
• Two months of employer-paid COBRA health coverage, with the option to continue coverage at personal expense thereafter .

I need to pay my mortgage and my kids tuition.
Better to stay in office 8 hours a day, 5 days a week.

It's ironic that employees are being asked to return to the office while I know 1 director that hasn't even opened his laptop in the past four months. The gap between hardworking employees like us who still face layoffs, and others who remain on the payroll without contributing and face no consequences, is truly astonishing, and that should tell you enough about the pyramidal function in our company.

Exactly. And the irony is, 90% of people in the office aren’t even working a full 8 hours. It’s all optics. Forcing people back just for the sake of appearances isn’t productivity, but it’s control. Remote work proves itself every day through results, not badge swipes.

" "There's none. There's just MD's email and that's it"

There's an entire page dedicated to the policy and questions. It was just updated and has been updated several times since March "

The fact that there is no formal policy in PDF breaches many countries legal definition of document so is worthless. Also it is a website constantly updated meaning no formal change logs and option to gaslight people.
If I say I earn 1 million USD does not make Dell pay me that if it is not in my contract in writing.

I haven’t returned to work in the past six years because the traffic in my area is unbearable. On some mornings, it took me three and a half hours to drive just 20 miles, and I can’t stand being late.I don't plan to return to the office until there's meaningful improvement in the road infrastructure or until taxpayer resources are more effectively allocated to support commuters. With all these problems at this point, I don’t foresee returning to the office. Working remotely has allowed me to reclaim around 12 hours a week—amounting to roughly 600 hours, or over 20 full days per year—that I’ve been able to invest in personal growth and development.

"You basically tried to stay fully remote and that's not the policy"

We were told our managers had discretion and my manager basically told me (not in writing unfortunately) to WFH since I am the only one from the team in north america. My boss was as surprised as I was when we were both invited last minute to a zoom with HR and tbe VP, he even tried to stick up for me.

"Yeah my manager said he didn't care if I came in as long as the work gets done. Fast forward a couple months and a VP has now put me on a PIP with some pretty lofty goals because I only went into to the office 10 times the last two months."

If you're not even going to try and play the game that's on you. You basically tried to stay fully remote and that's not the policy. Unless you have that one in writing from your manager, this is on you for not having common sense.

OMG STOP being sheeple! The orig post here is correct...nicely but boldly..honestly, speakup to your leaders.....esp if you can state ALL that YOU DO!! And don't be afraid to mention..."most groups are still 75% or above remote!".... forcing RTO on just a few..... due to locale "IS" discrimination (geographic)...SPEAK UP! Be honest, esp if you like your work but feel ur WORK-LIFE balance is now off "balance" due to RTO...you may be very surprised. Gawd..its your life..yes we need work, but stop giving companies, corps, the POWER...they still NEED good people esp. after WFRs. Show fondness...but be firm about who you are and what you bring to the game.

We delivered record profits for this company for years in a row during covid being 100% remote. Its like MD forgot all about that once JC started whispering in his ear to bring everyone back in. MD caved so this ultimately falls on him
