Thread regarding Dell Inc. layoffs

Spare yourself the frustration of rationalizing Dell’s acrions

They’re not stupid.

Ownership interests want significant change across a condensed timeline. To achieve that, they don’t mind the type of pressure that’s being exerted. To change gracefully (fairly) means far more planning and company concessions than what they’re willing to do.

Michael Dell’s made this known repeatedly: While customer first might be a joke, company second, and employee third isn’t. If Michael Dell cared about his employees, he wouldn’t have reversed WFH/Hybrid policies with such little warning (knowing how much it impacts working families even though it’s not something he’d ever have to consider himself).

In some ways, he’s a fine human being. In many other ways, he’s a typical greedy piece of sh-t that hides behind corporate rhetoric.

That said, he, along with other ownership, are incredibly shrewd business people. They’ll let people leave in droves because the Dell doesn’t innovate, and truly doesn’t need that much talent for the hardware pushing business we are, and because the job market’s in their favor. If they cut to much, no worry - they’ll saddle the remaining employees up with work until they need to rehire new ones. If they make mistakes, it doesn’t matter because they’re squeezing so hard they’re giving themselves plenty of rope.

Bottom line, you can’t rationalize their actions the way that you want to. They’re not operating that way. They may seem clueless and stupid because these decisions are ki-ling morale, but they’re not. They just don’t care.

Michael Dell’s net worth is ~100b. Dell’s market cap is ~67b. He’s interested in ballooning both, and unfortunately, you(we) don’t factor into that goal.

That said, treat your employment as a game and play it the way you want to. Don’t be upset or sad these things are happening - it’s just the result of greedy people doing greedy things. Keep that in mind as you preform your duties. Don’t extend yourself for a mega corporation that’s perfectly tuned at su-king you dry while convincing you we’re all in this together!

PLAY FAIR BUT WIN!!! (or whatever trite bullsh-t he’s peddling)

It’s almost poetic, really. A company that built its empire on efficiency now bleeding out talent through inefficiency and neglect.

The CEO, once hailed as a visionary, now reduced to awkward soundbites on X and LinkedIn, dutifully liked by billionaire tech bros trying to stay on the invite list.

This. I have been here two years and a few things I do notice

  1. never seen a company have so much disdain for its own employees
  2. ceo is as fake as a $3 bill. watching him pontificate about AI is cringe
  3. a subset of weirdly devoted employees despite the above

Run harder, smile wider, and don’t forget… we replaced your chair with a folding one.

What people don’t realize is they’re not fumbling through poor decisions, they’re executing a calculated pressure campaign. Bleed talent, compress headcount, and bet that people will break before leadership is forced to act human.
