If you’re new here, take what you need and go before you get stuck. The longer you stay, the more obvious it becomes that this place doesn’t reward loyalty, just burnout. Plenty of us learned that lesson the hard way. Ask anyone who's been here for a while, and they’ll tell you the same.

You are exactly right. If you are not identified as a HiPo, you are just a hired hand. This is especially bad for experienced hires. They will make promises, hinted threats, and squeeze every bit out of you. This place is not for a career. It promote unhealthy competition and burnout. Get out as fast as you can before it affects your physical and mental health. Many of us who got out are still suffering the trauma of being associated with this place.
I met some of the worst people on earth working at XOM. It was toxic from my 2nd week till I left years after. How I survived those years, only God alone knows. My worst experience working in corporate America and I've worked at Oxy, Chevron before joining XOM. I wouldn't wish this company on my worst enemy. Everyone looking out for themselves at the detriment of common sense. Wickedness galore that was enabled and coddled. Terrible supervisors that thought inserting themselves into everything was the job description. Gaslighting. Lies. My good lord.
I still look over those days with some trauma. God has fully healed me. XOM will probably never go down but it sure is going to implode and very soon. And alot of the evil people I met with be caught in the rot. I hope to never see any of them again in life. I wish them well though.
I am not out to move up. I am ready to get out retire. Even if I wanted to back stab and try to move up I cannot. I am done at exxon my career is over as my ranking states. When it happens to you then you will believe. When your fellow lovely co workers make you look bad or stab you in the back then you will know. No one can hurt me now even though they still talk bad about me and try to make me look bad. Be careful of the ones you call friends at exxon. I trust no one on my team and have not for five years. I wish it was not as bad at exxon as it seems but in my experience it has been.
@be+1jtmhn8w2 Are you “out to move up at any cost”? You stated “everyone is”. I’m not. I certainly know people who are not. In fact, almost all my close friends here are not. So I’m curious if you truly feel everyone (including yourself) are willing to do anything to move up at Exxon.
If you're not Indian, there's no place for you in future Exxon.
It makes a profit because oil is a necessity. But given current global trends about sustainability and the move towards renewable energy sources, we will see who are swimming na--d when the tide is low. Things are starting to fall apart. The top is just out to milk as much they can out of this dying cow. Who cares about rank and file? We are just pieces of chess for them to move around in this game.
I love seeing the newbies lusting after power. Exxon strings them along with promises of money. Look at the older employees to see the future. The way we old are forced out is the way the young will be. I have no worries because I can afford to leave at anytime. If you plan and save well you can too. There is to much drama, backstabbing, and unfairness at exxon. It is a terrible environment to work in. There is no trust or helpful employees at exxon. Everyone is out to move up at any cost. I see it in all the young employees the madness of promotion and success. Exxon will never suceed because of the dysfunction. Exxon thinks this way of pushing employees is best. It does not foster collaboration or sharing of new ideas. One employee kept his ideas to himself because he was afraid his boss would take credit and steal them. Even if you came up with an idea that would save the company millions if you were not in the managers favorites group you would not be listened to. One engineer proposed an alternative equipment change that he used at another company. The managers and other engineers ridiculed his proposal. Years later under another manager the idea was brought up again during a brainstorming meeting. The new manager loved the idea and asked why it was not implemented before. The shunded employee told the new manager it was because the old manager did not like the idea. I have seen many of examples of this during my term at exxon. Exxon is a truly dysfunctional place. I don't know how how it makes a profit and stays in business.
