Thread regarding MassMutual layoffs

Posting here because gla$$door won't let me

Employment status: Full time
Job title: Prefer not to say
Review headline: An ok company heading down a strange path

Pros:

  • some good teams to work with and for
  • many people work with heart, they want to do well and they enjoy the time spent with colleagues

Cons:
Leadership is a joke.
Layoffs one too many times to count.
If you want to work here, please beware you won't be for too long.
Gone are the days people work here and have stability.

I wish MassMutual were more honest. This isn't a tech company, stop pretending it is.
Many people in leadership roles and lack the skill set to be there.

I've been around people who DRAG THEIR FEET, getting things done that are within their responsibilities.
One too many in middle management lack initiative, run from their responsibilities, and refuse to be accountable for the job they signed up for.
Therefore leading to a lack of trust, and no one calls them out.
So they get to stay, meanwhile people who deliver high yielding results get the ax.

Too much money spent on frivolous initiatives, and the hiring of 3rd party vendors.

I've seen too many instances of favoritism.

Advice to management:
Why should I help you do your job? You know it all. And you are not open to real change. You're stuck in the past pretending you are in the crest of the direction tech is going. You claim you want to make it easier to do business with MassMutual in one breath whilst simultaneously moving jobs away from sources that do make it easier to do business. Good luck with the return on that investment.

As for high priced consultants, you left out E&Y! How much did finance pay them? Many 10s of millions/year. And for what!? The finance department still can’t figure out a basic P&L statement. How many times did they have to run the bonus numbers this year? 3? 4? In the end they just picked them out of a hat.

Don’t forget Accenture, Deloitte, McKinsey, Everest….the list goes on and on. Maybe they should hire someone who knows their job and won’t have to hire high priced consultants to do it for them!

I highly encourage you to try and re word in Glassdoor. Same thing happened to me— I fixed it up a bit and it got posted. I couldn’t agree with you more on middle managers or the person who commented about the ELT. Although I was not an exec I worked with the ELT a lot in my role at MM. I now work at a large bank and I confidently say the lack of professionalism at MM is INSANE. The favoritism, the lack of accountability— they should truly be ashamed of themselves. It’s a joke of a company that thinks a nice Seaport office and some free “Starbucks” will make up for all the stuff happening under cover. The amount of people I worked with that had no work life balance, they were run down, missing out on family time— for what? To impress the ELT that doesn’t give two s—ts about them? And then how many times are mass layoffs going to happen? A joke!

They have people in tech leadership roles who started in the call center and never worked in a tech company. All they know is MM processes and resist any recommendations from people with actual tech experience outside of MM.

It's favoritism based on length of tenure and not actual skills and experience.

Then they let go of all these teams and people doing good work so they can get away with paying for expensive consultants and vendors. How much is Genesys costing? Salesforce? Akamai? AWS? HUP? How many vendors make decisions and cause us to have layoffs to afford their costs?

Well said! I was there for about 2 1/2 years. They just keep moving everything to India and Romania. With a huge empty building in Springfield. I helped them use a vendor to build a tool to track layoffs for HR. dump!
