I'm not saying it's not true, I'm just trying to figure out if this is just a rumor that everybody accepted as fact or if there was something official I missed.

Not a rumor. It is happening. No official announcement yet, but several co-workers have told me our boss informed them that a RIF has been signed off on and they are one of the people being let go. I believe it is happening on the 19th.
