The university is, indeed, at high risk of closing. The reality of a decade of mismanagement has been widely recognized by the faculty - well before the layoffs, which have not, according to Provost Wiscott, resolved the issue. A number of additional layoffs happened under the radar over the 2024-2025 academic year bringing the number much higher than 91 - and it is very likely more are coming as students continue to feel the impacts and transfer to better options. Most faculty anticipate about a three year survival period with Charlotte being closed and sold first to provide a financial injection to Providence as Miami and Denver were and as those funds run out (as happened with Denver and Miami) ultimately Providence either going fully online or closing. Leadership at JWU is dismally inept. After the layoffs on May 14 Provost Wiscott sent the following to faculty not impacted by the layoffs. We "continue to face challenges, both internal and external, that will impact the nature of our work moving forward...". The situation is not the result of federal cuts or demographics.
All of higher education is suffering due to not enough 18 years olds going to college (i.e., the enrollment cliff). Sad state.
Extremely poor, incompetent leadership team, multiple assistant and associate provosts who dance around all day trying to look busy earning six figures while the faculty and staff bust their butts to work with the students on incredible projects with experiential learning like the student-run investment value fund. Students learn how to become sector analysts!
The university was also caught falsifying data to secure US News ranking and delisted and recently downgraded by S&P under Runey and Wiscott.
Five rounds of mass layoffs. Two campuses closed. Talk of closing Charlotte. The resignation of long-term President Bernardo--Souza. A massive data breach. Multiple programs closed. Multiple failed attempts to increase enrollment. All while Runey earns one million dollars a year, Provost Wiscott earns just under 400,000, and deans earn a quarter million. That is the equivalent of fifteen faculty positions. They won't survive without new leadership.
What is this, the 4th or 5th layoff under Runey? Runey closed two of the four campuses a few years ago.
Are they closing
There were more staff layoffs during the semester including online and staff roles not included in this announcement.
It was 60 Faculty and 31 Staff
