Hello Network,
This morning I was impacted by the recent round of layoffs at Expedia. While this news is never pleasant to hear or share, I've compiled a short FAQ to help answer some of your questions on the matter.
Q: Didn't you like just start there?
A: Feels like it, right? It's been around 6 months.
Q: Didn't you just have a baby?
A: Yep! She's 4 months old and her name is Alma. I'm hoping to line up work ASAP so I can continue buying her things she doesn't need with outrageous names like the SnuggleMePopTotLoungr.
Q: Are you sad?
A: Yes! I hate getting laid off. It's a major pet peeve of mine and feels even more dystopian in the context of the ongoing DOGEification of everything.
Q: How can I help?
A: Aww, that's so sweet. You don't have to do anything! If you feel compelled, please keep me in mind for any freelance or full-time ACD copy roles.
oh, look, Expedia is "restructuring" again, isn't that just precious... they're "sharpening their focus" by showing about 3% of their workforce the door, mostly those pesky mid-level product and tech folks... because nothing says "long-term growth" like kicking people to the curb right before you start "hiring the right people"...
it's all about "efficiency" and "reducing duplication," you see... just like that other massive reorganization back in 2020... guess the first round of "accelerated growth" via layoffs didn't quite accelerate enough, or maybe the duplication just magically grew back...
but don't you worry, CEO Ariane Gorin and the gang at Expedia Group assure us these are "difficult but necessary decisions"... necessary for what, exactly, besides making the next earnings call sound a bit more promising for the shareholders, who really knows...
they're trying to get that "right blend of layoffs and hirings," which sounds suspiciously like firing the people who know how things work and hiring cheaper ones, or maybe just fewer... to get operations "moving — fast"... presumably fast towards the next "restructuring"... it's just the circle of corporate life, isn't it... always "strengthening the business," one pink slip at a time... what a novel concept for Expedia, Hotels.com, and Vrbo... really groundbreaking stuff...
