Another failure: Ford Acquires Canopy, Discontinues Pickup Cam

From Ford Authority today, although this is old news being buried on a Friday afternoon:

Back in January 2022, Ford and ADT announced that the two companies were teaming up to create a new joint-venture called Canopy. This new outfit aimed to combine FoMoCo’s AI-driven camera technology with the ADT’s security monitoring services to provide improved vehicle security. Canopy’s very first product – the Pickup Cam – became available to pre-order back in late July 2023, and officially begun shipping to customers a few months later. Now, however, Ford has acquired Canopy and discontinued the Pickup Cam.

Canopy’s website now loads with a pop-up explaining this move, noting that it’s “now part of Ford Secure.” That message goes on to state that “Canopy will be launching an exclusive Ford product as part of the Ford Security suite of services. Stay tuned for more information about this exciting new partnership. Ford Motor Company has acquired Canopy, the trusted security solution for pickup truck beds. With Ford’s commitment to advancing vehicle safety and security, they plan to leverage Canopy’s resources and expertise to bolster security solutions for pickup truck owners. Collaboratively, our focus has shifted towards developing the next iteration of the Pickup Cam. As a result, the Canopy Pickup Cam will no longer be available for sale.”

As for existing customers, well, as of this September, the Canopy hardware and app will no longer be operational, and the company notes that it’s “taking proactive steps to offer a full refund for the hardware cost for all active subscribers. All refunds will be processed no later than September. Your Canopy device will be unpaired from your vehicle; therefore, you will be unable to connect to the app which means your canopy device will become inoperable.”

It is worth noting that Ford is developing a next-generation version of the Pickup Cam, so customers will have an alternative solution soon. As for Ford Security, it just launched this past February for select 2024 and 2025 Ford F-150 and Super Duty models. It includes both theft and tampering notifications in the FordPass app that can prevent the truck from being stolen – even if the thief has the key – along with a 24/7 hotline staffed by agents that work with police to recover a stolen vehicle, as well as insurance deductible reimbursements up to $2,500.

Since they were Ford X trying to sound like Tesla then Ford Next created by Farley, has this group contributed one iota of value to the company? Last financials I recall had them losing $3 billion annually, that was before Model e.

@qf+1jt97dzx2 the only compelling reason for the world travel is the need for flyer miles and hotel points for family vacations. No other purpose.

So you are saying “the good people in Ford leadership” are

  1. unable to deliver working products as promised,
  2. have to refund customer money, and
  3. have been losing market share since 2009

Ford is doomed unless BF, JF, DF and CM are all removed, for failure to produce results.

Where are all of you getting your information from? CM is one of the good people in Ford leadership, along with DF, JF, and of course BF.

I do not agree with any of the comments here.

LOL. Ford Authority report is few months late. If they read this site, they would know we covered this topic.

CM is flying all over the World “discussing” the next sand box venture. Add a few more buzz words and you’ll start speaking like him!!

Nothing like over promising and failing to deliver any functioning product. The original press release said it would cover the interiors of vehicles, not just truck beds….

“Canopy plans to launch industry-first, multi-sensor security systems with available professional monitoring early next year. The first products to be manufactured and sold will be available in the U.S. and the U.K. for the industry’s highest-volume commercial and retail pickups and vans – including the Ford F-150, F-150 Lightning, Transit vans and E-Transit – and will be easily installable by customers to protect expensive work and recreational equipment.”

Ford is the unluckiest to have Moran and his lack of talent. How he got into a position he is so completely unqualified for is a real mystery. He never worked anywhere but Ford and has never started a successful business. But somehow he is an expert on startups.
Hopefully Aragon recognizes this fraud and fires him.

“It is worth noting that Ford is developing a next-generation version of the Pickup Cam,”

It is worth noting that Ford still hasn’t bought a clue that there is no need for a “Pickup Cam.”

Nobody actually bought the first version, and people don’t just leave valuable stuff unsecured in their truck bed. Save over $300 million annually by laying off CM and the 300 people not accomplishing anything of value in that group.

CM: That guy is the luckiest Ford employee in the world. More power to him, though. Rake it in! Make it rain!

FLV, Canopy, C Moran and the whole crew behind them are FAKES. One epic FAIL after another, good riddance to them.
Layoffs? Think how much $$$$$$$$$$$$ can properly be invested what our customers have been demanding - QUALITY VEHICLES that aren't being recalled every month!

In lieu of refunds, customers will be offered their choice of slightly burnt Hermes bags.

Good opportune time to get FLV back with the company to grow the next-generation of Canopy and make it the success it was intended to be.
