Thread regarding Ford layoffs

Hearing there’s something in the summer coming around in office mandates / policy around remote work- anyone have any insights?

@jx+1jt0mp4y8 It doesn't matter where the teams that you support are. The idea of RTO is not about receiving a better quality work from employees, nor about increasing productivity. It is about making your life miserable enough that you quit, saving the company some severance, and be replaced with LCC personnel. And I used "personnel" and not "person", because each of us is being replaced by several people in those LCCs. That is how bad they are technically.

Ford only likes their new employees, and those that are 2 years plus start feeling the degraded culture.

They stripped folks of raises, bonuses and stock options to reward worthless directors from failing tech companies

Ford motor is being overrun by fruity big city tech mo--ns who had everything handed to them in their previous company.

But when they come to Ford, they are clueless and can’t do anything, then they blame the culture and talent lol.

Why? The groups I support aren't in Dearborn. Go to the office to sit on Teams like I do all day already?

Upper management will be exempt.

It’s not about efficiency or productivity. It’s about psychopaths being able to see the pain and anguish on people’s faces.

I'd go back in. But don't expect top tier results.

Employees only work hard enough not to get fired. The solos speeches, and collaboration nonsense, that only goes so far. I don't want to speak with anyone within my circle. I can do so at a fraction of a time, should I ever need their input, using Teams.

F*ck these useless narratives.

It would be better if we were all back in the office. Things were better then. People talked and worked closer. Hopefully this will happen soon.

Ford land thinks 2 people sitting at the same desk is acceptable. So I’m not surprised that they think they can house everybody. We’re not a bunch of 4th graders.

I’m tired of people checking out every Friday when they work at home. Ask a question in the morning then get a reply at 4pm from their iPhone with some BS about not having access right now.

I recall DF mentioned the benefits of RTO way back when he first started at Ford and he provided valid points how a company can improve the bottom line. Finally Ford Land and HR have listened.

Left Ford a few months back and this wouldn't surprise me one bit. Was treated as second class employee being fully remote, despite being hired as fully remote.

I was hiring remote employees in 2020 and 2021. I can corroborate that these employees were, in fact, told that they may be required to move to SE MI at some point in the future. Not saying that is going to happen now, just confirming that new remote hires were told that and even had a clause in their offer.

If an ultimatum is given as you are so sure of, then so be it. I can't imagine anyone thinking a job at Ford is worth pulling up roots for. Giving relocation ultimatums like that would prove there are flakes for management. So even though I disagree, if it comes to that oh well. Ford will be worse for it, but that's never stopped anyone there before from hitting rock bottom and asking for a shovel. If you want to retain top talent then do it. More concerned about a$$e$ in chairs? Choose your upholstery. Either way top talent likely walks out the door so if everyone's ok with that, it is what it is.

@ba+1jt0mp4y8 you're wrong. People hired as fully remote since COVID were told this was a potential in the future: required presence in SE Michigan.

So yes, they will be given an ultimatum, and required to move to SE Michigan to keep their jobs.

Unless you're the Atlanta-based CV LL4 with a penchant for cheap beer, fastfood burgers, and young attractive female employees.......

Bill Ford committed to having 5000 taxpaying employees in the train station and there’s nowhere near that number. Gotta get those tax breaks!

Over the past 5 years, many people didn’t demand pay raises even as inflation raged on because working remotely was worth it.

When they start losing an hour and a half, or more, each day commuting to an office, they’re going to demand those raises, or they’ll find other jobs that will pay.

As someone posted earlier, a lot of management are psychopaths and it’s hard to bully and torture people who work remotely.

They need that in-person cringing to get their jollies. It really grinds their oats when they can’t see the pain.

Well this will be interesting if you are classified as fully remote. I doubt ultimatums will be given for people whom it's not realistic for. If you began you position fully remote, you'll likely stay that way.

@b4+1jt0mp4y8 That has been a long time lie. In 2021 this was true. But since several layoffs, monthly layoffs, lack of backfills and retirements, there are more than enough seats in the current buildings! Especially since 2018 you've been only allotted a 3 foot desk. More butts in tighter spaces.

So you can poopoo this but it is to your own detriment. I happen to know for a fact that a full RTO is coming. This summer. A summer blockbuster if you will.

Can’t wait for everyone at Ford to be back in the office five days a week! It’s going to be great to see all of your smiling faces again.

Ford Doesn't have enough office space for people to come back 5 days a week. In July the new building opens, but even with that they won't be making everyone come back. I have heard tho it's best to hire in MI now. I think the goal is to slowly bring teams back where it makes sense, hire less remote workers, and make sure we have enough office space. I doubt they will make coders come in 5 days a week to buildings with no space for them. Product design will be in-person though physical stuff just has to be hands on, digital stuff space matters more.

If you didn’t take a pay cut to work remotely in the first place, what makes you think you should get a pay raise to return to the office?

Secondly, if you’re gonna let people go, why not figure out which ones are willing to return to the office first and then make your decision of who to fire? How else would you make an assessment on talent?

"Ford will have trouble keeping young employees if the job market recovers."

I see the sentiment here but let me clarify. Ford already has issues retaining talent and this will make that problem worse.

Being onsite 5 days a week is d-mb I feel less productive. But Fords whole attitude right now is to torture workers for the failures of leadership so be it. Can spend millions to build a train station to chase some fantasy but can't deliver a half decent product as competitors.

I am close to retiring, no Ford pension due to me.
I have a very good LL6, no interest in causing her an issue, but there is no chance I will return to the office 5 days per week.

A lower pay scale for people working remotely would be a good way to do it.

Many people would be happy with that arrangement.

But not the bankers and local governments. And the oil companies.

Efficiency has always been low at Ford. At least for the last several decades since Henry left the scene.

Eliminating domestic remote workers isn’t going to change that. But it will change the expense workers incur.

It costs workers money and time to commute and they are going to want to be compensated for that. You know, market forces. Ford will have trouble keeping young employees if the job market recovers. Their position will be, “I’ll work for $X if I have to be onsite everyday, or 85% of $X if I can work remotely most days.”

Remember, the elimination of working remotely is only because commercial real estate investors, bankers and landlords want it. They need those office buildings leased and filled to make their money. Big companies like Ford have to show they’re on the team.

I'm the office 5 days à week. Remote folks have the option to relocate to SE Michigan or termination. All happening July 1st.

Will be announced with the layoffs. Everyone will be too happy to still have their jobs to fight it.
