I am a first generation college graduate who is not white so I don't have the connections they have. In tech, every hiring manager I've interviewed with is Indian and I've noticed they only hire their own. I am also not Indian. Because of nepotism, I won't get a chance, even though I am a US citizen and they are on visa.

Also, why are companies filling entry-level positions with people on visa? They are supposed to be here to fill a gap in skill, not to be trained. US citizens should be the ones getting trained.

I say find a job immediately for your kids school or something in the community. Real talk: Going years without working is shameful when you know so many businesses, schools and neighborhoods need smart capable people to pitch in. Is it potentially (low) pay charity work? Maybe. Would honest work feel uncomfortable and underpaid for someone like you? Probably. But what hiring manager wants an entitled person with a gap in work history vs someone who wanted to provide value somewhere it was needed while they're between jobs?

It’s a tough market, but if you’ve been out that long with nothing things are going to be wicked hard.

Immediately make up a consulting business or other self-employment filler for your CV. We all know it is a game, but filling in dates negates a hurdle. Many HR folks I have worked with will not consider a CV with a six month gap.

Next is the process. What are you doing? Who helped with your CV and cover letters? What is your network doing for you?

I know one person let go in 2023 without an offer. They’re sc--wed as they were promoted into a supervisory role and failed at every turn. Their CV coming into the company was fluffy nonsense. The person who hired them was viewed negatively and suffered in their career.

Why share that? Because you need to think about how the person hiring you is going to be perceived six months post onboarding. Will you make them look good? Honest? This isn’t about you getting a job. It’s about advancing the hiring manager.

Good luck.

Good hygiene and a smile go a long way.
Neck beard, for instance, not good.
