Are you really all that naïve to think that HR makes the decision to do layoffs? Wake up. It’s business leadership that’ makes the call. HR just implements what they are told.

All new employees are DC. After five years you are automatically moved to DB

If you smarty pants think that DB are pension liabilities and should be scrapped then why even convert people to DB?

Why not auto fire any who hits 5 years of service.

“Shedding people who are pension “liabilities” before they reach retirement” sounds like age discrimination to me.

Salary costs. A 25 year employee making $200,000 a year is a lot more expensive than a college grad making $80,000. Of course a college grad won’t know a tenth of what a seasoned employee will but that’s hard to quantify on a spreadsheet.

Outside of shedding people who are pension “liabilities” before they reach retirement, are there other accounting benefits of continually laying off and rehiring people? Defined benefit has been removed as an option for new employees.
