Citigroup (2008): Citigroup cut 50,000 jobs in 2008, including a significant portion due to asset sales.
Sears (1993): Sears, Roebuck & Co. laid off 50,000 employees and closed 113 stores in 1993.
General Motors (2009): General Motors laid off 47,000 employees and closed five factories in 2009, during the Great Recession.
AT&T (1996): AT&T laid off 40,000 people in 1996.
Ford (2002): Ford cut 35,000 jobs in 2002.
Circuit City (2009): Circuit City laid off 34,000 jobs when it ceased operations.
Boeing (2001): Boeing laid off 31,000 employees in 2001 following the 9/11 attacks.

@a1... The big difference is that in 1993 when IBM let 60K go there were plenty of jobs for those people to find. A lot of people won't be so lucky in today's environment.
