Thread regarding Charles Schwab Corp. layoffs

What can I do

Not going to say which group but I have a manager whom I and my whole team loves. NEVER had a better manager in my life, noticing tho that they are having subtle differences between now and when they first started with our group. I first started picking up on it after the skip level with our director. I don’t feel like I can trust our director at all. They are the type of person whom holds resentment and uses things against you for years. I always noticed how that director would act and it’s known to everyone to be on your toes around them. During our skip level when we brought up how much we love our manager, our director pierced their lips and did their side head tilt. They even discounted the kiddos we gave them. Left us all feeling like we couldn’t give kuddos to them
It made me wonder if our director doesn’t like our boss, which to me is crazy they are the most popular manager in the whole department.

Long story short I fear our director is going to try and get rid of our manager somehow is there anything I can do to save them?
That or maybe our manager will end up leaving is my fear

I am sorry you are seeing this. As others have said, this isn't a unique situation at Schwab. To be honest, I am certain it is in other companies as well. I know of at least one MD in my department that I thought your post could be about.

All you can do is try to keep it neutral as best you can. If that person holds grudges (which most narcissists do) then you do not want to be on their sh*t list. Believe me, this can had long term consequences if that person has support from their leadership.

Real OP here- Whomever wrote this is sick and just a troll, I in no way wrote the below, shame on you.
Thank you to those that actually gave me good advice.

This post is just wrong- “OP here, should I be worried if I’m also in a romantic relationship with this person?”

I never would and never have, go get a life

In all seriousness Schwab is a highly political environment. My recommendation is that if you can't play the politics back (considering this is highly likely as this is your director) then you will need to pivot to another org or escape from Schwab. At a minimum I would look at temporarily moving to a position in your org under a different director if possible and make a more permanent move if your director has gained a lot of influence. This type of situation unfortunately happens to a lot of people at Schwab.

This director's manager (I think she was an MD) was laid off in the Oct/Nov 2023 layoffs. Prior to that layoff round, she had eliminated a handful of good employees, whom she tortured both during employment and also as she was pushing them out. Sort of like how a cat plays with its prey before devouring it.

OP here, sounds like there are multiple directors like this, cause this director and department didn’t have anyone laid off in the original 23 layoffs. So think it’s someone else some of you are mentioning but this director has the same qualities.
I’m just worried about my manager in general, they have a heart of gold, it makes me feel like we will suffer and the good managers will be removed to keep around the je-ks

The one that OP is most likely referring to is all that, plus a majorly jealous and sadistic streak that her reports experience both while employed under her, and also as she is pushing you out. The comment I left before about the side head tilt she made that the OP mentioned was removed before, but it is true that she is that toxic and doesn't want anyone, especially her reports sharing the spotlight. This isn't just us being mad because she gave us feedback or pushed us out, this is us confirming her very real evil streak.

I have a crazy lunatic Manager, Director and MD all are useless and micro-manage us to the nth degree like counting how many hours we are in office and how long we go on lunch brakes or how often our kids are sick etc. None of my leaders have an ounce of leadership skills. You are lucky and I hope you find a solution.

Reach out to your manager and offer some kind and supportive words. They’re probably feeling beat down despite trying so hard.

Formally document it to HR. In case they fire you. You can sue their as--s.

More than one of us thinks they know the group, although it is a common story across multiple orgs. Damage is done. Your manager is on the list or not. The team is on the list for supporting or not.

Guidance is same. Everyone plans for each day to be their last by choice or decision. Have your things in order. Don't leave valuables at your desk and document everything. There are old posts here about recording and documenting to prepare for arbitration. Constructive discharge and a bad VP aren't actionable, but lots of other things can help make a case. Just don't spend too much effort on it if you can get a better gig.

Good luck.

OP- not sure if this director has been reported or not but I’ll be honest what could one report on this without getting in trouble themselves for standing up to them. It just feels helpless I can’t do something for someone whom actually cares, it’s like torture

Darn, I think I know the director you are referring to, and therefore also the department. Manipulative, sabotaging narcissist reported multiple times in the past by others (assuming I'm correct about the director you are referring to). Has pushed so many people out in a short time span, and enjoys torturing them in the process.

100% your manager’s director or MD is making their life he-l with unrealistic and out of touch expectations. Chances are your manager is planning their exit already.
