Thread regarding Canon Inc. layoffs

So, what’s the deal? Are layoffs coming soon or not?

There’s all kinds of gossip going around. Given our performance and the way companies operate these days, “do more with less” and all that, it wouldn’t surprise me if some cuts are coming. I’d really like to know, because like a lot of us, I’m worried about my job with the way the economy and job market are right now.

I remember just prior to last year's layoff, my manager would constantly reassure everyone that there was no word of any impending layoffs. But as it got closer to layoff time the manager was far more reserved and dodged any question about it. The week leading up to it, all management on the team was pretty much tight lipped and almost completely avoidant to all interaction with us. There was feeling then...we knew what was coming. It didn't need to be said. The actions of our leadership alone told us everything.

A few friends who still work there told me recently that the same feeling is back. Something is up. And it stemmed from the third floor being vacated (Supposedly so they can use it as a demo floor for the short-listers bidding on the building). It'll happen soon enough, unfortunately.

The ones that are working their bodies into the ground understand and feel your anxiety and frustration. They increased the sales quota by $10k plus per rep without researching territories, past performance, or speaking with the representatives as well as their direct managers. 90% of the sales team are in the red with no support in sight. We operate as 5 plus different roles with very little support, yet are blamed for missing quota. Troubling times indeed.

Being part of a union would squash a lot of what’s happening for years but especially recently.

Certainly understand your concern. You are not alone. If management at any company had a shred of decency, they'd lay that one to rest. Otherwise, under that scenario, productivity will take a serious nosedive. But we're talking about people without any compassion for workers who provide their families just to make end's meet. The horse hockey argument that people are being paid too much is a nonsense argument. The only people that are under-worked and overpaid are the ones making decisions that affect the livelihoods of workers who have to put up with micromanaging managers who are compensating for something missing in their pathetic lives. Body part issues? Lack of affection from their spouse or significant other? Insecure, period? Or do they get their jollies making people's lives miserable because they can? Regardless, time for folks to quit putting up with the abuse and confront the so and so at the office. Enough is enough should be the battlecry. Do it. And do it now
