For those in the know, does IT monitor laptop activity, and location... Asking for a friend?
Also have seen videos where teams activity can easily be tracked.

I agree with you all that it is only under a special case that the results are looked at. Meaning the teamlead and manager already suspect "theft of time", and are already formulating or in the PIP process. However, the apps are ALWAYS being monitored for ALL employees. The use of those data and the ability for the teamlead and manager to know require a VP approval. Yeah, it is recorded but a secret unless it is specifically sought after.
There is a second means, to this too. If the team lead suspects some malfeasance, he, she, or he/she can ask IT to lockdown a person's laptop immediately. Example if you think that someone is stealing protected data. Then the team lead will be asked if they want to go through all communications, for example " do you want all emails that have been sent from the machine?" They also ask what sort of data breach etc. Then they will look without the VP approval.
There are about 1500 ethics alerts every year. About 200/year get a deeper investigation. about 50/year result in a termination. There are about 99,000 employees ... do the math there is a really -really low probability that they'd bother to look at you, and it would have to be a very clear case of malfeasance for them to look. They don't bother with anything that is not stupidly obvious and very illegal.
Shell is certainly changing but I don’t think that data is being used in that way.
It’s more like - when somebody is very obviously being negligent or lazy and they are looked into to see if the numbers are near zero.
Even if Shell wanted to check laptop activity, I trust them to understand that office days mean you’re away from your laptop a lot for various reasons.
Do not use a mouse mover. Almost any companies productivity tracking software from the last two years will red flag that.
Just be a grown up who does the right amount of work and life is easier. Nobody wants to babysit you.
This is such a joke as a former Shell employee. People rarely work over 2.5 hours per day. The idea that you're going to track laptops to ensure people are working 8 hours per day or from their work location is so stupid. Why don't you just hire people you trust to get the work done and not count hours! The 40 hour work week and in office policy is an archaic rule.
It is important to know and realize that the machine is Shell's machine. They have rules you must abide by. If they say no accessing your private Email, then they mean that.
Yes, they really do track how much time you are on each app.
Stupidly, let's say that they block yahoo mail. BUT if you go to Yahoo finance and click on the mail icon from there, you can access your email. But don't do this.
Reason I was asking was since I got a windows connect machine just this year every morning when I logon I get a notification saying workspace one has accessed this device location.
Not sure if I am just being paranoid. But these constant reorgs and changing remote work policies. I don't want to give more ammunition during a future layoff round.
Sometimes. As a teamlead, when I suspected an employee of not coming to work with a VP signoff I was able to get the badge in badge out times for when they were on campus, and sign in sign out times for their laptop. I didn't care or suspect their location. The location oddly does matter if it is in another state too frequently, there are tax implications. For a wild example if it is in another country, you might need a visa and might owe taxes. If you were hired in Texas, but secretly moved to Illinois and worked remotely there you would owe Illinois state taxes. Nobody would enforce this if you were on vacation and checked your laptop, but moving there is another story. You need to get approval to work remotely in another state, generally it is approved but then the taxes are applied.
