Thread regarding BP PLC layoffs

PIPs

My team stopped caring about any work...

Everyone I talked to says I got the worst team on the floor when I took over (one of them faked a heart attack, the hospital said there wasn't anything wrong). I'm swapping them 100% out and bringing new blood in... putting some on pips and pushing others to other teams so I can have competent people.

HR is barely helping - to the flls here, what would you do???

Morale is so low and for very good reason and with Leadership hinting at more layoffs, pushing on how much we all need to save money (so they can keep their jobs while sending ours to India), and stock doing so badly. Its hard to find much motivation esp with the tini tiny raises given out year after year. Try team building and other way to create better morale within your team. Trying caring about people. Your attitude is the exact opposite of what is needed at BP right now.

Ding ding ding. Yeah, I gave up on work because you told me I have no future here and my role wasn’t important enough to keep ve outsourcing it to someone with 0 understanding of the business in Puneeeeeeee India

Imagine how great it would be to hear both sides of this story! Did the team give up on work because the previous leader was a soul-su-king, micro-managing mo--n with an MBA from BumF*ck University and no real oilfield experience? Could it be that YOU are one of those leaders as well with no self awareness at all? Having been in this industry for a long time, me thinks the real issue is with the worthless middle managers and not the quality of the working grunts.....

To the comment that ID'd this team as outsiders (Chevron/Shell/Exxon whatev)... what's wrong with getting rid of 'em for whatever reason then? They keep their jobs and lifers get laid off?

They're taking our jobs.

OP, seems as if you are basing your actions from opinions of others instead of figuring out what the issue is. The issue may lie with you. You automatically assume the guy was faking a heart attack. Maybe he had anxiety and it is better to be safe than to have an actual heart attack. Swapping out your team 100% is not the answer and you failed as a leader to 1) let that happen 2) to think that would solve your problems 3) you care more about others opinions instead of taking time to figure out what is going on.

Worst team on the floor... if you're in a 12 story building there are 12 of those. Some floors have like only one team, I guess that they could be the best and worst team on the floor at the same time.

The Dunning-Kruger effect describes a cognitive bias where individuals with low competence in a specific area overestimate their abilities, while highly skilled individuals tend to underestimate their expertise. This bias stems from a lack of self-awareness, making people unable to recognize the extent of their own ignorance.

i know who you are talking about, the guy actually did have a health thing. the manager thinks he's too smart to need advice, so you're not him since he wouldn't be asking. but if you're not who i think you are, get a 360 or go to hr yourself.

could you be my supervisor? He is terrible, many complaints for his arrogant, belittling behaviors and has made my important job redundant. He also has poor grammar like you do.

If this is a legitimate request, it says a lot about the type of leaders currently in bp. Not understanding the cause of the poor performance (which may be yourself), promotion of persons to leadership levels without competency (i.e. yourself), etc. I suggest to send a 360feedback form to your team to determine their take on your leadership, which may highlight areas that you can change to motivate them.
