The DRE is the conductor of an out-of-tune orchestra.
They're the ones that make sure important parts last just slightly longer than the warranty.
They'll let the customer pay for repairs.
How about we fix the 6.2 liter
As a boomer, I request an ARE...Analog...RE

DRE - depends on what the commodity is and under which function.
Responsible for the release of designs but also needs to attend a million meetings both online and in person, must work with the designers (guidance and direction) and must understand both technical specifications and engineering requirements. They will line up suppliers, do cost estimates and troubleshoot designs at various stages in the design process. There are also engineering goals that much be reached, including cost cutting, bench-marking, documentation, etc.
For most suppliers, the designer and engineer are the same person, aka "Design Engineer".
There's much more going on that just creating work orders and PPTs for the manager as the other person here just explained. The part where "the actual engineering analysis" was mentioned makes me think they were not a DRE because it's required of most DREs at GM.
If you have any specific questions, some of us would be happy to explain.
Design Release Engineer. They perform a truly fascinating array of administrative assignments for parts their manager has assigned them. Primarily, they make weekly presentations to their leadership and monthly presentations to executives so that they can learn about how cars and trucks are made. Sometimes they look at designs on their computer (that’s the Design part) and sometimes they talk to other people who do the actual engineering analysis (that’s the Engineering part). Mostly they scramble from day to day to fill out electronic forms and publish PowerPoint presentations as quickly as possible because their performance is primarily graded upon submitting all those reports and presentations on time.
