Thread regarding Dell Inc. layoffs

Being demoted to IC

got to be the most humiliating ever. All of a sudden you are piers with your subordinates.
Far worse a punishment than getting wfr with a severance.

Only face saving move is to quit and move on
utterly impossible to spin it in a positive manner

I was demoted from M10 to I10 with a bunch of others last August. No change in my role leading the team or my comp, just humiliation for me and confusion for my team (who is my manager?). I never have had a demotion in my 30+ year tech career, so that along with being remote I knew my career at Dell was a zombie. So I started my job search then and committed to sticking it out until the bonus. Landed a new job and promptly exited at the end of March. Much greener pastures.

This so-called demotion, in my case, would mean a larger salary and a larger bonus. So please demote me. I would rather be demoted than have to try to manage 20 people who don’t work anywhere near where I work.

Leave Dell. Company not gonna survive. 20 is a way to layoffs managers. Next they will reduce 20 to 10. Then will layoff more managers. Leave Dell when you have the chance!

Hey if you’re getting paid the same and don’t have to waste time with people reporting to you, sounds good to me.

Humiliation???

Typical Indian mindset... di.ck measuring contest.. whats my title.. and what "others" think of me..

But I understand though, even my wife insults me because im not a manager.

Sounds like Hr posting on here. There is no people leader who was converted to IC unwillingly, who thinks it was a ‘good thing’. Stop, just stop with the BS.

Yes, while true that if you stayed someone thought you were needed- it will only last until this next round.

Respect yourself. Get out.

Good God it's "peers" not "piers"

Nah, it was intentional because we're all in the same boat.

Been there, done that. Don't mind it. I don't see it as humiliating and if you've been a manager you would think you'd know that there is a lot of internal politics that goes on behind the curtains. When they fiddle around with spans and layers people this is what happens.

I would argue that you have done your job as a manager poorly if you have any sort of issues with moving back into an IC role. That probably means you've been an a--hole hiding behind a title, and not a leader.

I am one who tried mgmt and abso-fu--ing-lutely hated it and for a long time I wanted to get back to IC and actually doing meaningful things, not just checking whether others were actually doing their jobs. So a “demotion” to IC would be a serious blessing for me.

I was a manager and got downgraded to IC. Asked what my options were and ended up getting placed on the redundancy list. Not sure this would apply, but worth a go. Currently in Ireland Redundancy package is 6 weeks per working year (plus they top it up a little).

Strange. Most the true leaders I know there that have gone back into IC roles were positive about it.

The fact that you refer to your team as your subordinates tells me all I need to know about you... You don't deserve to be a manager, and your team is better off not having you have any authority over their careers.

I completely disagree -> IC is much better than M. I could not imagine becoming a M -> it will be utmost humiliation for me.

it's hard for current ICs that may have been up for promotion next round to get a new manager, 20 is just ridiculous. good luck with 1x1s and career path discussions

many directors or senior managers got their position because they were exceptional performers or at least perceived that way, all the directors I know were ICs at one point.. they tend to have a wealth of SME.. I suspect attrition (the intended plan) will occur for both ICs and new ICs.

Good God it's "peers" not "piers" unless you're fishing off of them. This is the kind of sh-t that makes me wonder how some of you became managers in the first place.

Oh look .. every comment here is supporting the "leaders" and wants us to be compassionate towards them. These same "leaders" got more than $ Million as compensation in past decade and did nothing except politics and threaten us to give 5 stars in Tell Dell. My boss, the Sr. Dir was on vacation every 6 months.
Now they want compassion " it can happen to any of us".. LOL . It has happened to all of us.. and we are in the job market.. you are welcome to join. Let us see how many companies want you - the political leaders- in the technology innovation landscape.

We've had many cases like this in our org. I personally know five directors who became I10s—not because they were incompetent. Some simply had smaller teams of 5 to 10 people, and others were merged into teams led by Sr directors. Of course, these directors, not the sr directors, shifted to I10 due to seniority. Aren’t we all in similar situations? At this point, I don’t judge anyone. It could be me someday.

I completely disagree. Just quit and move on? If only it was so easy. Whilst it does nothing for personal morale, I would recommend you demote your ego and promote your financial security. Polish up your resume, leverage your network and seek out external opportunities. In the meantime, you continue to earn and if WFR does eventually arrive you will receive severance.

It happens to many of us. We still do the M job even we are now ICs. Reason is simple, 20 directs for each mgr. You are not alone.

It can be humiliating but it doesn’t have to be. I would rather work with a peer than a manager.

Sorry to hear that.
Not that it makes any difference but did you have any warning, like a bad review? Or was it just the people in an office with windows moving you around like a chess piece so they could make some arbitrary numbers?
