Thread regarding Dell Inc. layoffs

Bain runs Dell

Bain the consulting company runs Dell. Bain says “Jump”. Dell says “how high?”

Sad really.

Bain tells MD to get to 80K employees. He is doing it
Bain tells MD to RTO he does.
Bain tells MD that everyone needs 15-17 people reporting to them. It shall be.
Bain says Dell should only have 1500 software tools, it will be done.

These decisions make no sense, they’re not based on any factual evidence that this will improve anything.

In fact most people think they’re ridiculous ideas. However they still deploy them.

This is why we have so much turmoil in Dell with more coming. The end game? Who knows, but MD isn’t running the company. A contracting company is and it’s pathetic.

Big consulting firms are always a win-win choice for management.
If their plan succeeds and a good transformation actually happens, the Director/VP (or whatever) who hired them can make a good impression and cash out in terms of career advancement.
In case the experience is unsuccessful, they could simply say they've hired one of the most renowned consulting firms, thus transferring the accountability from themselves to the consulting firm.
Plus, they can hide behind the consultant anytime they have to take a decision that distresses workforce.

“Bain the consulting company runs Dell. Bain says “Jump”. Dell says “how high”

I never understood this saying. If you ask ‘how high?’ Aren’t you demonstrating hesitancy in what is supposed to be the ultimate in enamored devotion?

Looks like there is a fairly even split between reds and blues on this site.

Rather significant wfr action completed this week, I was told 20% head count reduction. Management layer shake up, 20 directs per manager, 15 per VP.
IT's office 365 license renewal leaked, 90k seats

Multiply that by about 158 million and you get a pool of voters that us constantly duped into believing they have to vote for a democrat or a republican in every election.

Here’s an idea! Let’s hire a partner away from Bain and give them a Co-COO title! That’ll fix things!

Bain and other so called management consultancies are the biggest scams around! Bring them onboard and they will always organize workshops, find something wrong, suggest changes without any accountability. At the same time billing by the hour and raking the money in.

The only sure thing that AI is proven to be good at, is Decision making.
And we know Dell has VP and Sr.Dir that have made wrong decisions for YEARS and never delivered growth or revenue in any of those years that they lead that Org.
I would expect Dell to replace those VP PdM and Sr. Dir with AI for strategy and decisions.
I am sure it will be cheaper and more efficient to pivot the software on the AI if it is making wrong decisions.

At this point, Bain runs Dell, Trump would call it “the best consulting ever, maybe in history,” Elon would suggest firing everyone and replacing them with bots, and Michael’s just trying to keep a straight face while making it all look intentional.

The reality is, many large corporations lean on firms like Bain when navigating major transitions or looking to cut costs, boost margins, or simplify operations.

That said, it’s fair to question whether these sweeping mandates like RTO, headcount targets, and tool rationalization are actually improving anything or just creating chaos. These changes often ignore team dynamics, company culture, and the trust that’s been built over years.

Still, I wouldn’t say MD isn’t running the company. He may be listening to Bain, but the decisions ultimately still have his signature on them. The bigger issue is whether those decisions reflect Dell’s values or just short-term cost-cutting to please Wall Street.

We’re not alone in this. A lot of tech companies are struggling to find the right balance right now. Let’s just hope that in the process of chasing efficiency, we don’t lose what made Dell special in the first place. Or do y’all think we already lost it?
