Thread regarding Dell Inc. layoffs

Lack of professionalism

The majority of people at Dell who hold any management position are just unprofessional. They just want you to "do things", without explaining why, or what the goals are, or anything like that. They just want good little soliders. They give feedback absolutely no feedback and when you do talk with them, it's just to give orders.

I've never met such a bunch of cluess id10ts in my life. How does this company make any money with these id10ts in charge?

i have never seen any company promote the VP and Sr.Dir after laying off all their reports and shutting down the product as the VP and Sr.Dir failed to bring it to market.
This tells you about accountability at Dell.

'You have a lot to learn about career ownership'

LoL. You sound self-serving and presumptuous. I would not take advice from anyone who's pursuing a 'career' at dell.

"But they are the ones setting the 1x1s, moran.
It's their meeting. They should have the agenda and game plan."

You have a lot to learn about career ownership, everything is earned, nothing is given. Managing up effectively is career 101.

But they are the ones setting the 1x1s, moran.
It's their meeting. They should have the agenda and game plan. If not, let's make 1x1s tentative. Management setup the 1x1s and we are expected to drive it? efff off.

We know 1x1s for many is just a checkbox in their management/leadership by numbers worksheet.

Every one on one I had at Dell was a waste of time. Nothing but a bull$hit session. They don't show interest in helping you grow. My manager in GOPO was a joke. All lipservice that she would help me get to the next level and the only thing she helped with was showing me the door. She put very toxic feedback from my peer on my review! I am hoping karma will bite her in the a$$. What a rotten person on all levels!

The reason they don’t do anything is anyone below the level of SVP has no authority- they can only do what the “C”s tell them to do.

"All 1x1s are effectively useless."

Then take control of them. I set agendas for my 1x1s and with my skip levels. I have a template for feedback and notes during the session (AI summarizes and assigns tasks from those) and it is sent and acknowledged by my leaders. We use this to track what we both said we will do, what we have done and what expectations are for the next session. We also review a capacity assessment that I track to ensure the work I am working on is of value and to eliminate unnecessary work that is not.

Leaders are not your parents, take control of your own career. If you don't care about it, why should they have to care about it for you.

“Dell leadership is filled with unimpressive people.
They are basically headless automatons”

True. I developed an AI assisted process where one person can easily oversee 100 or more ICs. It can even summarize their feedback and process it for the SVP level. Since all layers of management below (sometimes including) SVPs only distribute directives from on high, our tech tool decisions are made on golf courses, and the C-level wants as many people replaced by AI as possible, I shouldn’t have trouble convincing them to look at it.

Ya, that's what you get in ISG when you let India run the show.

"why am I still making 2021 wages?"

You must be really fun at parties. Many of us in ISG are still stuck with 2015 wages.

Dell leadership is filled with unimpressive people.

They are basically headless automatons carrying out orders from above.
Really no insight or direction.

Some truth to this. But they’re not following orders. If they were they’d be putting themselves out of a job. All the mid level bureaucrats are just stealing each other’s ideas and code when they can get their hands on it and trying to build little fiefdoms to protect themselves from layoffs. It’s all busy work. You can build the best thing ever and still be laid off to protect someone else’s buddy.

Completely agree. All 1x1s are effectively useless. Oh, no feedback? No notes? Then where’s my promotion that I haven’t had in 3 years. If I’m an “expert” in my role then why am I still making 2021 wages?

VPs are also out here openly admitting that they don’t KNOW our customer facing policies. Completely incompetent. It’s all about who is more fun at parties.
