Thread regarding Macy's Inc. layoffs

Mall shooting

Shooting in my local mall. The mall is closed for criminal investigation but Macy’s is open. Should we believe that this company cares for its employees when they don’t even get the next day off to cope with the traumatic event? You can watch the officers work the crime scene from the gate.

Fashion Valley stores closed except Macy’s & Bloomingdale’s.

This doesn’t compare but when the hill across the street from our mall caught fire (same month LA was burning), other stores closed and we stayed open. So no, they don’t care.

It’s not a horrible thing to say, it’s a factual thing to say. Macy’s is a “for profit business.” Given that fact, they don’t have an option to stay closed. Few angles covered in the post. Anyone that feels uncomfortable does not have to come in. Anyone that needs support, there are resources available. Some folks need their hours and checks, if the store didn’t open, it would impact their ability to earn money. Guessing someone may chime in and say they should just close and pay everyone, back to the first point, for profit businesses cannot operate like that. Check the year over year declines… few more years like that and no one will have jobs, so decisions like this are not real options. So in the end, please stay home if you’re not comfortable, but don’t blame the company for staying open.

If you need the day off, take the day off. Some employees cannot afford to be off and need to be there to support their families. You have to look at both sides of the coin here. While this was a horrible tragedy, life doesn’t stop. If you have the privilege to be off for the day, exercise your right to call out. But Macys is supporting everyone by being open and giving g their employees the option to choose.

What a horrible thing to say. No one is asking for Macy’s to be a non profit. We are asking for is common human decency

The mall can still be closed but Macy’s has multiple exterior entrances to fully operate independently. It’s just a business decision folks. Macy’s is not a non profit charity organization.

So the mall closes, but Macy's stays open because they think that people will be rushing to shop at a mall where there has just been a shooting. Brilliant. If nothing else, the optics of this are terrible.

I am so sorry you are going through this. If you are traumatized, let your manager know. They should be able to get you get help through the Employee Assistance Program. Let them know you won’t be in tomorrow if you feel you can’t. More than likely they’ll give you the standard reliability conversation. Reliability should be protected in a case like this. Partner with HR if you need to.
I’m going to definitely recommend you talk to someone for your own mental health if you’re affected at all.
