Thread regarding Blackbaud Inc. layoffs

On the topic of company direction and future of our products, can someone fill me in on how Raiser's Edge NXT is missing so many features?

None of my colleagues been around long enough to know. I have only been at the company since 2020 so I am missing a lot of the legacy years and information.

I've read old some old comments from customers and it sounds like years ago RENXT basically had very little functionality. That even over the years many of the main features all had to be done in database view still.

How exactly did this happen? Were the RENXT engineering teams too small, or were they all focused on RE7? Why launch that RENXT at all then?

It's a flagship product so I figured they had to have tons of developers. Even just recently they are accelerating to add more functionality to RENXT. But what exactly is taking so long? With developer productivity tools, modern software engineering knowledge and higher level languages etc. They can't quickly write up those features with some of the logic already existing in RE7 to reference?

Is the RE7 codebase just that massive, or were the guys who originally wrote RE7 amazing?

Interesting history, thanks for filling me in. Why exactly did they try to serve the needs of Archdiocese of New York? Some kind of personal relationship there or did BB think that they would've made a ton of money off them?

Whoever wrote the most-recent comment and called Mike “Drunk Driver”, you dropped this: 👑

Hit the nail right on the head. Blackbaud is COOKED and the c-suite knows it; they’re going to get a huge pay-day at our expense.

Company direction?

Look into my crystal ball. Forget about investment into RENXT.. bugs? missing features? falling behind the competition? Who cares... us and others like us, who care about the job they do, are the problem. We and our types who keep asking for time or investment to do better (but remember time = money) are the problem. So if you can fix or add these things within your small area of the BB machine without the bigwigs finding out fantastic! Otherwise don't bother your leadership team - they don't have time or are even empowered for this trivial sh!t. They are too busy looking at how to maximize profit margin by replacing you and I with an AI bot...

For us still working for BB our marching orders are

  1. Focus sales teams to sign up, pressure, bully, or otherwise manipulate existing clients into multi-year deals with increased charges per year for old software.
  2. Slash and burn all costs this includes the number one expense being staff. Transition over to cheaper labour markets e.g. India. (There are exceptions to every rule and for BB we got money for shenanigans in Hawaii or perhaps another acquisition)
  3. Rule of 40? No thanks. Rule of 60. Oh yea baby!!! remember rule of 40 is based on revenue growth ("sly sales tactics" - check) plus profit margins ("fire/don't backfill staff" - check).

Yessir the future is clear... we must maximize the financials so drunk driver can get one last lap of honor and exit with a big pay day.

I take no issue with Blackbaud creating faith-based software. I take issue with Blackbaud creating a faith-based solution (whose platform was RENXT), that exclusively served the needs of only the Roman Catholic Church, namely Archdiocese of New York. The entire concept was so tone-deaf, exclusionary, and alienated their most loyal customer and employee base. I’ll never understand how they came to the conclusion that the best course of action was to defund Raiser’s Edge when Church Management was Raiser’s Edge with Church-specific entitlements. The ELT is full of self-serving id--ts.

Faith based software.

Was that at the bottom of the exhaustive list of “stupid things to put into the world”?

Well, one reason is they defunded RENXT for Church Management, their train wreck of an attempt at faith-based software….then it was “Total Cloud Solution”. They’ve slowly defunded RE7 over the last decade and RE7 is filled with stupid bugs that they won’t address because “database view is eventually going away”. I’d argue that Blackbaud’s flagship product is no longer Raiser’s Edge; it’s the stock ticker.
